Description

UNrren STATES ATENT FFlCte JAMES J. RUSS, OF VORCES'TE t, MASSACHUSETTS.
SCISSORS-SHARPENER.
Specilication forming part of Letters Patent No. LfSS, dated December 152, 1865.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, JAMES J. RUSS, ot' Woreester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Sharpener for Scissors; and l do herebydeclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in tlie art to make and use the saine.
The present invention relates to a novel and useful implement or device especially intended for the sharpening of scissors, shears, and other similar eutting-instrun'ients; and it consists in so securing upon one side of a suitable stand an adjustable polygonal or other suitable shaped sharpener-plate that its edge will project above the top of the said stand, either more or less, according to the position in which it is set, in combination with which Sharpenerplate, and upon and across the top ot the stand, is a raised guide for the scissors when its blade is drawn across the edge of' the sharpening-plate, which guide is also susceptible of adjustment thereon, whereby it and the sharpener-plate can be set to correspond with the bevel of the cutting-edges ot scissors, 85e., be it more or less, as will be apparent from the following detailed description.
In accompanying plate of drawings my improved sharpener for scissors, 85e., is illustrated, Figure l being a plan or top view of the implement, and Fig. 2 a front elevation.
A in the drawings represents the stand of the Sharpener, which may be made of wood or other suitable material, and ot' the general form and appearance shown in the drawings, with a broad base, fu, or of any other proper shape, the upper edge, c, of said stand being slightly inclined from its centre towards each end.
d is a iiat and thin steel plate secured to and upon the front face or surface of the stand by a screw, f, passing loosely through its center, by loosening which screw and then turning the plate upon it the plate can be set at any desired position, and there held by tighteningthe screw. The edge or periphery of this plate d is made of an octogonal or other polygonal shape, and the plate is so placed upon the stand with reference to its top edge, that such side or sides of the plate as are in proper position therefor will project above the same, either more or less, according as the plate is turned either to the right or left, any one of its sides being brought to the top edge of the stand by properly and sufficiently turning the plate therefor, as is evident without further explanation, and for a purpose to be hereinafter specified. Each side of this polygonal-shaped periphery of the steel plate is slightly and sutlieiently beveled or rounded toward its exterior face, to impart a sharp cutting-edge thereto, so that by simply drawing or passingl the blades of the scissors across such sideor sides of the plates as project above the top ot' the stand their cutting-edges will be sharpened thereby, the scissors being thus draw across the edge ot' the said plate until the desired sharpness has been secured. But in order to enable the scissors to be drawn with evenness across the sharpening-edge ot the said plate d, as above explained, l have arranged upon such one of the inclines ofthe stand as the plate projects above a ilat metallic plate, l, secured by a set-screw, m, and slot a, which plate has a raised vertical lip or guide o, extending entirely across the width ot' the top ot' the stand, against the face p, of which guide or lip o, the blade of the scissors bears, as shown in Fig. 2, as it is drawn across the Sharpener-plate, and thus guided evenly thereto, the position of such guide with regard to the sharpening-edge of the plate d, being adjusted at pleasure by simply unloosening its set-screw m and moving it in the proper direction theret'or, and then tightening the same, thus firmly holding the guide thereat, and as the projecting of the Sharpener-edge above the top ofthe stand can be regulated at pleasure7 as before explained, it is obvious that therefore the implement can be adjusted to suit the bevel ot' the scissor-blades, be it more or less, the advantages ot which are obvious.
To protect the top of the stand, if made ot' wood, from becoming worn or eut away by the scissors as they are drawn across it, as exF plained, .l cover such` portion of it with a plate, fr, either'formin g a part ot' the guide-plate or attached to it, made oi' such a metal or material that while it is not liable to be cut by the seis sors it will not injure or dull in the least deA gree the sharpness of their cutting-edges.
The Sharpener, constructed and arranged as described, is to be of a convenient size for general use, and it is intended to supply a want p im i ilong felt for a scissorsharpener adapted for household purposes.
`By arranging the sharpener-plate as explained, when one of its sides has become dull from use, another can be readily brought in position therefor, and so on until all are useless, when, removing the plate, its edge can be easily renewed or a new one inserted in its place; and it may be here further remarked that, by making the sharpenerplate many sided or polygonal, as described, its adjustment to the various bevelsof the scissor-blades, as described, is allowable, whichy would not be the ease were it circular, for the reason that no change of direction of the edge would take place with regard to the top of the stand, however so much the plate might be turned.
It is not necessary that the top ofthe stand should be inclined, and, as is obvious, there are many other variations Which may be made in the various parts of the Sharpener, and therefore I do not intend to limit myself to the precise detail construction herein described.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Let- Jfers Patent- 1. Theadjustablepolygonal-shapedsharpener-plate d., in combination with any suitable stand therefor, arranged together and operating substantially in the manner described, and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with the polygonal sharpen er-plate, secured to a suitable stand, of the adjustable guide p, arranged together so as to be adjusted with regard to each other and to the stand, substantially in the manner described, and for the purpose specified.
The above specification ot' my invention signed by me this 24th day ot' October, 1865.
l JAMES J. RUSS. Witnesses ALBERT W. BROWN, WM. E. SEYoN.
