Description

G. R. J. RUGGLES.
Shoemakers Knife. NO 164104. Patentedlune.8,1875.
THE GRAPHIC C0.PHDTO L!TH.39&41 PARK PLACLNY- UNITED STATES PATENT Or nen GEORGE E. J. RUGGLES, OF MILFORD, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT lN SHOEMAKERS KNIVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164.104, dated J one 8, 1875; application filed February 15, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, GEORGE E. J .RUGGLES, of Milford, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knives; and I do hereby declare that the followingis afull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in knives for the purpose of cutting leather, cloth, or other articles, from a pattern or otherwise; and consists of a metallic holder secured to a suitable handle. Said holder is provided, near its outer edge, with grooves, in which a blade is made adjustable by means of a screw passing through a slot in the holder, and througha hole in the blade, and is screwed into a nut on the front of the blade, or in an equivalent manner, by which arrangementthe blade can be adjusted in the grooves of the holder as it is worn ofi', and the holder can be used for a great number of blades, as will now be more fully shown and described.
On the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 represents a rear elevation, and Fig. 3 represents a cross-section on the line A B, shown in Fig. 2.
Similar letters refer to similar parts whor ever they occur on the drawings.
a represents the holder, secured to a suitable handle, b, as shown. The holdera is provided with grooves c 0 near its outer end, in which the adjustable blade (1 is secured by means of the screw 6 passing through the slot f, made in the holder (1, and through the blade d, and is screwed into a suitable sliding nut, g, on the front of the blade 01, as shown in the drawings.
By this arrangement I am able to use a very small and inexpensive blade, (1, that can easily be adjusted downward in the groove of the holder as the blade wears off, and when it is worn out a new one can easily be inserted at a very small expense.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and use of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim- The holder a, provided with the groove 0 c and slot f, in combination with the adjustable blade at and the fastening device 0 g, all substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own invention I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE R. J. RUGGLES.
