Be it known that I, J. H, QUACKENBUSH, of' Springtielchin the county of Hampden, and Commonwealth of MassachusettsQhave invented a' new-and useful Improved Harness vRound Knife and Ido vhereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a knife, with my invention applied.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a harness-makers round knifeJWhereby the blade may be made movable in its handle or socket, so that each corner of the Yblade may be more properly adjusted for certain operations in cutting out vdifferent kinds of work than can be done by the use of the ordinary :round knife. 4
It is well known that-the ordinary round knife is `not particularly adapted to any particular kind of work, unless itis so permanently constructed,*and` then the constant use ofeaeh particular point in doing its peculiar :kind of work, wears the point away much fasterthan would be the case if the blade were adjustable in its handle or socket.

Through the socket b, and perpendicular to -the slot z', is a hole, e, and near the end of thefsocket b is another hole, having a thread cut therein, into 'which is'itted the screw ci, which has a head with a slot cut therein, in which to insert a screw-driver,l or other instrument, to turn it, or may be a thumb-screw,` and be turned with the hand. i

The blade A being secured in the slot z' of the socket b, by means cf the pivote, which may be a small screw, if desirable, the screw d is inserted in its threaded hole in the socket b, and also passing through the curved slot e in the blade A. If it is desired to4 use one point, 7L, for cutting out fine work, the blade A is turned to one side, as shown in red lines in fig. 1, and the screw d is then turned in tightly, which causesiboth sides of the socket b to clasp tightly the' sides of the/blade A, thus holding said bladeA securely in that positicn.
If, in cutting', the handle g is now heldin Ya horizontal position, with thelpoint h downward, a small portion only of the said point h enters the leather, which is particularly desirable in certain kinds of work.
On the other` hand, if the handle g be held in a horizontal position, with the point l downward, the said point'l, with a very considerable portion of the edge of .the blade forward of the point Z, will enter the leather, in the operation of cutting, and this feature is favorable for certain other kinds of work. v'lhen, if it is desired `to changel points, to prevent rapid and uneven wear, thescrew d may be slightly loosened, the blade be turned v upon its pivot c to the other side, or to a corresponding opposite position in its socket, and the screw-cl tightened again. The point lrmay now be used 'forlfineeutting and th'epointh for other straight or coarse wor-k.
I am aware that a stationary round knife has long4 been in use, but never, to my knowledge, has such a knife been inade adjustable. y Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new', and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
