'WITN Essgs INVENTOR .f @www im y ATroRNEY.
UNITED STATEs PATENT OEEIOE.N
WILLIAM B. BARTON, OF GEORGETOWN, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN WELT-TRIIMMERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 186,524, dated January 23, 1877; application filed December 9, 1876.
of Massachusetts, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Shoemakers Tools;
and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of thevconstruction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures Of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a side view of this invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a detached view ofthe blade. This invention has relation to welt-knives; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the semicircular or arc-shaped adjustable blade, the holding-clamp at the end of the shank, and the welt-spring, whereby the welt is held down during the cutting operation, as hereinafter shown and described. In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the shank of the knife, having the broad end b transversely recessed to receive 'a portion of the circular blade, and provided with a clamp-plate or cap, c, which is heldclosely to the shank-head in such amanner as to secure the interposed blade firmly in its adjustment by means of a clamp-screw, d. B indicates theblade, which is semicircular or arcshaped. Its convex margin is slightly hanged orcreased, as indicated at e, for convenience in sharpening, and extends slightly at one end in the form' of a guardpoint, y. The cutting-edge kis located in rear of this point, and is radial. G represents a spring, which extends by the cuttingedge of back. It is easily detached for sharpening,
and can he set up in theclamp-shank, as itis worn away until nearly gone. V
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with the semicircular arc-shaped blade, having a radial end edge Of the shank A, having its broad end transversely recessed to'form a slideway for the blade, the cap c, and clamp-screw d, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the shank A, and adjustable blade B, of the welt-holding spring C, extending by the cutting-edge olfsaid blade, substantially as specified.
3. The semicircular arc-shaped blade B, having a radial cutting-edge at itsV end, and a guide-crease, e, parallel tO its Outer margin, to facilitate sharpening said edge, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM RANDAL BARTON.
