Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 41,5771, dated February 9, 1864.

To all whom it may concern.-

Beit known'that I,A.F. GUsHMAN, of Hart ford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Im-A proved Box-Plane; and I do hereby declare 'that the following is a full, clear, and exact vline xx, Fig'. 1. This invention consists in a box-plane orv sraper, with a cast-iron curved stock and slotted grooved head, to which thel knife is secared by a screwfclamp in such a manner that the same Vcan be adjusted to take ner or coarser chips, and that it can readily be taken ontand sharpened or replaced by another. Said knife is made with four cuttingledges, each of which cian be brought in a working position.

To enable others skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.V

stock is fastened to the handle bya screwthread or in any other convenient manner, and the head B is slotted to admit the cuttingledge of the knife D. This knife is made square andl provided with four cutting-edges,

as clearly shown in Fig. 4, and it is fastened l to the head B by a screw-clamp, E, so that it can readily be adjusted to take coarser or ner chips, orA that it can be turned in order to change the euttin g edges in, case one edge should become dull. i g

The screw-clamp E consists of a slotted plate of cast-iron, which is secured to the head B by rnc-ans of thumb screws a. 1t is provided with a recess to receive the knife, and a square projection, Ab, on its inner i surface fits into a square hole, b', in the center ofthe knife and ment the clamp E is compelled to assume its proper central position on ythe head, and the knife, being retained by the square projection, is prevented from turning or slipping.

When the screws a, are slackened, the clamp E, together with theknife, can be shifted toward or from theWorking-face d ofthe scraper, so as to take coa-rser or tiner chips, and when the knife has arrived in the desired posit-ion .itis fastened by screwing up thethumbscrews.

the knife can be readily turned, or when all the four cutting-edges are dull it can be taken out and replaced by a new one or sharpened.

The stock A, being made of cast-iron, is much cheaper than the ordinary Wrought-iron scraper and its shape'is much lnore convenient tothe hand, and by making the knife adjustable the stock can be used for anylength of time, the knife being replaced whenever the same is used up.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
