Description
N. FETE, PNOTO-UTNDGMPHEH. WABHINTOM, D C
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
SHERMAN W. ADAMS, OF YVETHERSFIELD, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN HOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,966, dated October 23, 1866.
To all 'whom it may concern Bc it known that I, SHERMAN W. ADAMS, of Wethersfield, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hoes; and do hereby declare the following Ato be a full and exact description of the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and t0 the lctters marked thereon.
0f these drawings, Figure 1 is a back view of my improved hoe, with the blade thereof set at less than a right angle with the handle. Fig. 2 is a side view with the blade set in nearly the same plane with the handle. Fig. 3 isa section view taken through the line x .r of Fig. 1.
Similar letters ot' reference indicate corresponding' parts in the several figures.
My improvement relates to a hoe containing a blade which can be adjusted to any required angle with reference to the handle, so as to adapt the hoe to the stature of the person using it and to the material that is to be hoed, it admitting to a certain degree, whenever desired, of the hoe being used as a small shovel. (See position of blade in Fig. 2.)
This improvement is also highly useful whenever corn-stalks or similar substances are rcquired to be cut, as the inclination of the blade can be easily changed so as to adapt the implement to the stroke of the person making the peculiar shear-cut needed in that operation. This improvement will also permit of the blade being easily detached from the handle for the purpose of having its edge ground or replacing it, if worn out, by a new one.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my said invention, I will proceed to describe its construction.
o is the blade of the hoe. b is the handle. c is a screw-bolt which takes into and iirmly fastens together two ears-one, d, made upon the blade and the other, d', made upon the neck ofthe handle. These ears have upon the surfaces that meet together, and that move in opposite directions from each other as soon as the bolt c is unscrewed to permit ot' the blade changing its angle of inclination, radial serrations. At the other end of the handle, and convenient for the user ot the implement, there is inserted in a socket a screwdriver, e, which is to be used for the purpose of removing the bolt or screwing it up against the ears d d', so as to make the serrations upon the inner faces of the ears take firmly into each other, and thereby tix the blade at any required angle of inclination.
This construction of hoe is simple, compact, and durable, and will be found to have in prac tical use all the advantages above set forth.
Having described my invention, I claim as new- 1. The combination of the blade a and handle b, when constructed and operating substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The hoe as above described and set torth, as a new article of manufacture.
SHERMAN W. ADAMS.
