WILLIAM B. KIRLIN,'OF SAN BENITO, TEXS.
KNIFE-SHAPENER.
Application filed December 5, 1916.
To aZZ whom 1f/may concer-u:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM B. KIRLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Benito, in the county of Cameron and State of Texas, have invented new and useful 1mprovements in Knife-Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends the provision of a device primarily designed for sharpening table knives, but also susceptible for use in placing a. keen edge upon cutting tools and implements of a like nature.
More specifically stated the invention ernbodies a stock preferably formed from a single piece of material, and designed to be readily clamped upon the edge of a table or other support, and adapted for use in connection with a pair of bits or cutters having convex cutting edges disposed in confronte ing relation, the bits or cutters being capable of adjustment to present new portions of the respective cutting edges for effective work as the occasion requires.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
ln the drawing forming part of this specification like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein:-
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a view looking in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail view of the stock.
Fig. i is a similar view of one of the cutters or bits.
A device constructed in accordance with my invention embodies a stock 10, preferably constructed from a single piece of material, and offset at one end as at 11 to provide a substantially U-shaped portion which is adapted to be fitted upon the edge of a table or other similar support indicated at 12. The flange 13 of the U-shaped portion is provided witha threaded aperture through which a clamp screw 14 is threaded for cooperation with the support 12 to hold the device clamped upon the latter. Manifestly this is accomplished by tightening the clamp screw against the under side of the support.

bifurcated to provide a 'substantially il 'shaped slot 15 opening at the upper edge of the stock, while the adjacent edges of the separated portions defined bythe bifurcation are convex as at 16. The blade of the knife or other similar article indicated at 17 is arranged within the slot 15 and moved therein to be sharpened in the manner to be pres ently described.
1n connection with a stock constructed as described, I preferably employ two bits or cutters 18 each of which is identical in construction. There is one bit or cutter provided for each of the separated portions of the stock defined by the bifurcation, and said cutters or bits are correspondingly 'shaped with respect to the separated portions against one side of which they are secured. Each cutter is provided with a curved edge portion 19 corresponding to the convexity of the adjacent edge 1G of its associated separated section of the stock. The cutters or bits are so disposed that the curved edges 19 thereof are arranged in confronting relation so that when the blade of the knife or other article to be worked upon is positioned within the slot 15, between the cutters or bits 18, it is only necessary to draw the knife a few times between the bits or cutters in order to place a keen edge upon the blade. It is of course to be understood that the bits or cutters will be constructed from the hardest chill steel, and have their curved edges very sharp for this purpose.
Each of the cutters is provided with a vertically disposed arcuate shaped slot 2O through which extends a threaded bolt 21,y which latter projects from each of the separated portions of the stock dened by the bifurcation. rlhese slots permit the bits or cutters to be adjusted with a view of presenting new portions of their curved edges for effective work, when certain portions of the said curved edges become worn. rl`his adjustment can be readily and quickly effected, and the bits or cutters retained in their adjusted positions by tightening the thumb nuts 23 upon the bolts. It is obvious that the arcuate shaped slots permits the curved edges of the respective cutters to as sume ay proper position relatively when the cutters are moved either in an upward or downward direction for the purpose above mentioned.
`While it is believed that from the fore going description the nature and advantages of the invention Will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that what is herein shown and described is merely illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention and that such changes may be resorted to When desired as fall Within the scope of what is claimed.
What is claimed is 1. A knife Sharpener embodying a stock bifnrcated at one end to provide spaced portions, a bit secured to each portion, said bits having convex edges disposed in confronting relatiom and means for supporting said bits for sliding adjustment upon their respective portions ot the stock.
'2. A knife Sharpener embodying a stock biiurcated at one end to provide spaced portions, the confronting edges of said portions being convex, a bit for each portion1 said bits corresponding in shape to the configuration of said portions and having their con* vVex edges disposed substantially flush with the corresponding edges or' said spaced portions of the stock, and means for supporting said bits for sliding adjustment whereby the convex edges of the bits may be maintained substantially flush With the adjacent edges of said port-ions in adjusted position.
3. A knife Sharpener' embodying a stock bifu cated at one end to provide spaced portions, the confronting edges of said portions being convex, a bit arranged in face to face Contact With each portion, said bitshaving convex edges disposed in confront-ing relation, a threaded element projecting from each portion, said bits having arcuate shaped slots receiving` said elements, vwhereby said bits are capableo sliding` adjustment in a manner whereby the convex edges are maintained substantially flush with the convex edges of the stock, and thumb nuts associated with said elements for holding said bits fixed in their adjusted position.
4. A knife Sharpener embodying a stock biiureated at oneend to provide spaced por-V tions, the adjacent edges of said portions being convex, a substantially U-shaped odset portion arranged at the opposite end of the stock, whereby the' latter may be arranged on the edge of a. support,a clamp screw carried by saidYU-shaped portion, a bit arranged in face to face contact With each of the portions dened by the bifurcation, said bits having convex edges disposed in confronting relation, and substantially flush with the adjacent edges of said spaced portions, said bits being mounted for sliding adj ustment7 .in a manner Whereby'they convex edges of the bits maintain a position substantially lush with the corresponding edges ot' the stock, andmeans for holding said bits fixed in their adjusted position.
vIn testimony whereof I afiiX my signature.
