IMPROVEMENT IN EDGE-PLANES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,299, dated July 21, 1874; application filed I April 3, 1874.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER BAUER, of N ewark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Edge-Plancrs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the salue, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure l is a longitudinal section of my in vention when constructed with an upright handle. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the same when constructed with a horizontal handle. Fig. 4 is a plan or top view of the same.
Similar letters indicate correspon din g parts.
This invention consists in an edge-planer composed of a stock to which is secured an adjustable cutter or knife, an adjustable cap, and one or two guides, which maybe adjustable or rigidly attached to said stock in such a manner that by placing one of the guides against the edge of a piece of leather or other material, and pushing the planer along on said edge, a shaving of more or less thickness can be taken off and the edge can be rapidly and nicely prepared for various purposes.
In the drawing, the letter A designates the stock of my planer, which is cast of brass, iron, or other suitable metal7 and to the base of which is secured the knife a by means of a set-screw, b. This set-screw is tapped into the knife, and it passes through a slot, c, in the stock, so that when said set-screw is loose the knife can be moved backward or forward, or the knife can be readily taken off for the purpose of sharpening. On the stock A is also secured a cap, d, which may be made in the form shown in Figs. l and 2, or in the form shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The face (lo of this cap is adjustable in relation to the cutting-edge of the knife by a set-screw, e, so that it can be raised or lowered, according to the thickness of the shaving which itis desired to cut off. If the cap is made in the form shown in Figs. l and 2 it is secured in position simply by the set-screw e, which passes through a slotin the cap, and is tapped into the stock. In this case the cap is rigid, and it is adjusted by moving it up or down on the stock. The cap shown in Figs. 3 and 4 is firmly secured to the stock by a screw, f, and it is made of spring-steeh'so that its face d springs up. The set-screw c serves to depress the face according to the thickness of the shaving to be taken olf. With the stock A are combined 011e or more guides, z.. If the stock is made in the form shown in Figs. l and 2 only one such guide is used, and this guide is secured to the side of the stock by a setscrew, z',- but if the stock is made in the form shown in Figs. 8 and 4 the guides L l1. are cast solid with said stock. Vith the stock A is combined a handle, :3, the position of which is determined by the shape and construction of the stock. In Figs. l and 2 the handle is situated in a vertical position; but in Figs. 3 and 4 its position is horizontal or slightly inclined.
Vhen my edge-planer is to be used, the guide h (or one of these guides) is placed against the edge ofthe leather, While the stock is depressed upon the surface of the leather, so that it rests upon the face of the cap d, and by pushing the plane along a shaving of uniform thickness is taken off, the thickness of said shaving being determined by the position of the cap d. Said cap is provided with an aperture, j, to allow the shaving to pass out.
By these means the edges of pieces ot leather can be prepared expeditiously and with ease for the manufacture of harness, or for the manufacture of boots and shoes, or for trunks, or other articles in the construction. of which leather is used.
I am aware that edge-planes for boots and shoes have been constructed with a stock having bearings to receive a diagonally-arranged knife, the knife being interlocked with the guard. Such, not being my invention, is disclaimed.
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The stock A, havinga central slot, c, to receive the adjusting-screw of the knife a, in combination with the cap d, having opening' j, and with a guide, h, all constructed as herein shown, to operate substantially a-s and for the purpose specified.
PETER BAUER.
