Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY BELCHER AND THOMAS H. BELGHER, OF IRVINGTON, N. J.
IMPROVEMENT IN RULERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159.294, dated February 2, 1875; application tiled November 30, 1874.
To all whom Iit may concern:
Be it known that We, HENRY BELOHER and THOMAS H. BELCHER, both of the village of Irvington, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rulers; and We do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, Which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in the manufacture of rulers; and consists in inserting in each edge thereof thin strips of metal of dicerent forms, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
One edge of the ruler is beveled in the ordinary manner, and a thin strip of metal, a, is inserted in a groove formed diagonally in the edge thereof, which is so cut that there is formed a slnall under lip somewhat back from the true edge of the rule, but making a supy l port for the piece of sharpened metal a, which is secured therein by means of rivets, after which it is finished by being sharpened in the usual manner, forming a tine smooth edge for cutting paper. The opposite edge is nished with a convex and concave surface, and is also provided with a thin strip of metal, b, also inserted in a groove made parallel with the sides of the ruler in the convex portion of the edge thereof, and projecting outward a trifle less than one-eighth of an inch. This piece of metal is inserted parallel to the upper and lower surface of the rule, forming a smooth metallic edge for ruling. The sharpened edged metal A is placed into the Wooden center in a diagonal direction, so that its fine edge may rest upon the same surface as the flat side of the ruler.
Having thus described our invention, what We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
A combination ruler and paper-cutter, constructed with the sharpened metal paper-cutter set at an angle into Wooden center, and so arranged that its edge rests upon the saine plane as the corresponding flat surface of its wooden center, as herein described.
In testimony that We claim the foregoing as our own invention We affix hereto our signatures in presence of two Witnesses.
HENRY BELGHER. THOS. H. BELCHER. Witnesses:
GEO. H. WILsoN, GEO. W. FRANCIS.
