UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JULIUS BRANDT, OF NEWV ROCHELLE, NEW YORK.
COMBINED HATCHET AND PLANE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 379,677, dated March 20, 1888.
Application filed November 26, 1887. Serial No. 256,220. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUS BRANDT, of New Rochelle, Westchester county, State of New York, haveinvented a new and Improved Combined Hatchet and Plane, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a hatchet having a slotted blade in which there is secured a plane bit. Thus the plane may be used to smooth the rough surface cut by the hatchet.
The invention is deemed particularly useful for shingle-roofing, but the tool is also useful for other purposes and for the household generally.
The invention consists in the various features of improvement more fully pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are side views of my improved tool, showing opposite sides thereof. Fig. 3 is a side view with the plate I) removed. Fig. 4 is a similar view with the plate band the planebit removed. Fig. 5 is an inner face view of the plate'b. Fig. 6 isaside view of the plane bit, and Fig. 7 an edge view thereof. Fig. 8 is a transverse section of the tool on line a: m, Fig. 9. Fig. 9 is a section on line y y, Fig. 8.
The letter a represents the blade of a hatchet or ax, slotted from face to face. One cheek of the blade at is made in the form of a removable plate, b, secured to the blade proper by screws and provided with a beveled edge, I).
c is the plane-bit projecting with its cuttingedge into the slot of the blade and entering with its main body a space or chamber between plate and the inner face of the blade. The bite is provided with a notch, c, that is engaged by an enlargement, d, of a set-screw, (Z, passing through the blade a. By means of this screw the bit may be raised or lowered so as to increase or diminish the exposed portion of the cutting-edge. The bit 0 is made of the bent form shown in Fig. 7, the upper part being inclined so as to lie flush against the beveled edge I) of plate I) and present the proper cutting angle, while the lower part is straight to fit the chamber within the blade.
To the inclined part of the bit 0 there is secured, by means of a screw, 0, a gage'plate, f,
angular in cross-section, and which is slotted for engagement with screw 0. This plate may thus be adjusted nearer to or further away from the cutting-edge of bit c. One -of the arms of plate f is flush with the bit 0, Fig. 7, while the other arm projects toward the edge of the slot in the blade (1., and serves to conduct the shavings to the exterior of the blade. The inclination of the bit may be adjusted by means of a pair of screws, 9, bearing against the gage-plate f.
in use the bit may, if desired, be entirely drawn into the blade a, and thus injury to the bit is prevented if the tool is used a hatchet.
WVhat I claim isl. The combination ofa slotted blade, a, with a removable plate, I), adapted to be secured to the blade, and with a plane-bit, c, projecting with its cutting-edge into the slot of the blade and entering with its body a chamber back of plate I), and with a gage-plate, which is adapted to conduct the shavings to the ante rior of blade a, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of a slotted blade, a. with the removable plate 11, adapted to be secured to the blade, and with a plane-bit, 0, projecting with its cutting-edge into the slot of the blade and entering with its body a chamber back of plate I), and with set-screw d, for increasing or diminishing the exposed portion of the cutting-edge of bit 0, and with a gage plate, f, adapted to conduct the shavings to the exterior of blade a, substantially as specified.
