Description

vto the lower side of the slot E, or, at least,l to half the depth of the slot E. It is `well to leave a little shoulder i l. passing through the plate C into the block A, holding the plate C in its place,and the le B in its place.
`is made wide enough to admit the thickness of the blade of large shears, and isbevellcd 'only one `Way', so that y Vthe flat orvinside side of the' blade must be placed against the side,- of the slot `F, marked `'bringing'the cutting` u `edge down upon thele'B.' Then, holding` the tool in theleft hand, andrdraw theblale towards the operator, i u, straight perfectly-bevellvcd edgo will be formed on the blade of 'the shears. G is `a round .plate of metall, 1with a `hole for screw D to passthrough, which should go 'into the block just above the topoffth-e file B to give it a lthey can be readily broken apart. Fig. 4 is an edge view of one of the files after it is broken from the'strip in f which t-was cut. i

TO ALL WHOMIT MAY CONCERN:
Beit kno-wn that I, J. NELSON JACOBS, of u. Worcester, in .the county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts,` have invented a new and improved Instrument or4 Tool for Sharpening Knives and Scissors; and I do 'hereby ,i declare that the following is a full .a.nd exact description4 thereof, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of Vreferencemarked thereon.`
Like letters refer to like parts. i
The nature of my invention consists Vin so arranging a-narrow flat float-file in a block of metal, plaster of u Paris, wood, or other material, that the edge of the several teeth on the Vfile shall form an angle of about fortyl l five degrees with the guard, Then,r by placing theb'lade of the knife or scissors in proper position `(which will l be hereafter described) against the guard, the cutting edge of the knife or scissors will be brought into contact `'with the teeth of the file at such an angleas will give the proper bevel to-the said cutting edge;
Toenable others skilled in the art tomakeand use my invention, I will proceedA to describe its construction andvoperation. i v v Figure 1 represents the tool arranged for sharpening both knives and scissors.
Figure 2'reprcsents'the instrument or tool arranged for `sharpening scissorsandshears only.
Figure?) represents the st'rp orstring of' il'es as they are cut and marked olf ready to be separated for use.
Figure 4 represents anedge view of the le after it is separated from 'the strip in which it was cut.
Figure 5 represents guarl-plate used on the instrument, as shown in iig. 1an edge view.-
Like letters refer to like parts inthe severaliigures. l i I u u A A, in figs. 1 and 2, are the blocks; E E, the slots running the length et theblock (or less) for therecep tion 'ofthe files B Bfv F isthe slot or opening made from the top ofthe block A, about the whole width, down' forthe back edge of the file 'B to rest against. in 'g. 1, are guards for the sidesrof the knife torest against,- letting 4the edge come nearly down to thev edges of the metal guard-plate C. The edges of C arebevelledvto; form a guide for' sharpening scissors, for which 'purpose place "the ilat side ofthe bladeV against ,the edge 2 of the plate C, and lthen draw the knife or' scissors from the tool, holding the tool in 'the left hand. yD is a screw When the ile getsworn in one place, by loosening the screw D the ile maybe moved along, andthus the whole length of it may be used. In iig. 2 the slot F is cut down to `the bottomof' the file, and across the block A, and
firm hold in the block. The screw and platchold the le in its' place, and, by 4loosening -the screw, the iile can be moved along, so as to permit wearing ontnearly the whole length of the file. The ends of the. blocks'A may be coveredwitha coat of emery, or other material of like nature, Vfor the purpose of removing the wire'pedge u formed on the inside of the bladeiin sharpening on the file; or they may bey coated with ock, paper, leather,l u cloth, or other material, for the purpose of ornament or finish. 4 u l ,y
Figi-3 shows the series of files B B B, Zinc., as they appear after they have been-cut, marked off into'A widths i suitable for each separate file, and hardened. The red lines show where the plate is partly cutthrough, so that What `I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is v i 1. The combination of the ellots E and F, the ile B, screw D, and platefG, asvand forthe purpose specified.
2. In ycombination with the above, finishing the ends of the blocks of wood by covering the same with Hock, enlery, or other like line fibrous or granular substance, for the purpose specified.
