Description

UNITED TA'rEs PATENT OFFICE.
RUSSELL S. GLADWIN, OF WEST MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN SCISSORS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUSSELL S. GLADWIN, of West Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Im provement in Scissors; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying' drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a' full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said draw ing constitutes part of this specification and rcpresents, i11- Figure l,the scissors open, represented as closed in broken lines 5 Fig. 2, an edge view ofthe same; and in Fig. 3, an end view of the hooked blade, enlarged.
This invention relates to an improvement in scissors, the object being a device for cutting the thread, when required, in sewing-machines.
In sewing-machines the distance is so short between the point ofthe needle and the work that it is with difficulty the thread can be reached to draw it through the eye of the needle, so that Whenthethread is cut asuficient length of thread is left to recommence sewing. By my invention this difficulty is overcome; and it consists in constructing one of the blades of a pair of scissors with a hooked end, by means of which the thread may be reached and drawn away from the needle the length required.
A is one blade, and B the other blade of a pair of scissors. As here represented, the blade B is constructed with a hook, a, at its end, as seen enlarged in Fig. 3, the blades pivoted together in the usual manner at (I. When desired to clip the thread the hooked end is introduced to catch the thread, by means of which the thread may be drawn out the length required. The blade A overlapping the hook will clip the thread while in the grasp ofthe hook. As this instrument is more conveniently used when the blades are held open I construct atlat bow-spring, C, each end of which is formed with a loop or eye, f,in the cen ter of which is formed a notch to receive the end i ofthe scissors, and through the eye and end of the scissors a pintle is inserted to form a hinge.
Thus constructed, the scissors are used by tal;- ing hold of the bow ot' the spring between the thumb and linger, pressing the spring together to close the blades, the. reaction of the spring opening the blades when the pressure is removed.
I claim as my invention- In a pair of scissors, one of the blades constructed with a hook, a, at the end and on the cutting-edge, substantially in the manner herein set forth.
R. S. GLADWIN.
