IJGHN W. MURRELL, OF SEAFORD, DELAWARE, ASSIGNOR TO I-IIM- SELF, SAMUEL PERRY, AND EDWARD R. JACOBS.
Letters PatentvNo. 83,353, dated October v20, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN ATTACHMENTS TO SPQOLS FOR CUTTING- THREAD.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom lit may conce/rn:
Beit known that I, JOHN W. MURRELL, oi' Seaford,
. in the county of Sussex, and in the State of Delaware,
have. invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thread-Breaker and G utter and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the. accompanying drawings,
and to the letters of referencev marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a metal plate, with a clainp or spring in the centre, for the purpose of attaching'it to a spool, :and with notches on its ends, for the purpose of breaking the thread.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and use 1nyfinvention,'I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to theannexed drawings, which form a part of' this specification, and
in which- Figure 1 is a perspective, and Figure 2 a side view, with spool attached. I take an oblong piece of hard metal, of suitable size, in which I cnt two strips, a a, lengthwise, from near the centre to' near the ends, leaving them connected with the contre piece, C.
The two strips a a are bent upwards, so as to form a clamp or spring, which is inserted in a spool, to hold it steady in the saine. l
In the ends of the plate are cut several notches, M,
the edges of which are slightly bevelled and sharpened,
so as to easily break the thread.
If the thread is out as usual, with scissors, the end of it is left clean and square, anddoes notpass readily through the eye of a needle; but, with my instrument, the thread-is broken across the sharp edge ofthe notches, and the end ofthe thread is left in snella-condition that it can be neatly pointed bythe fingers, and will readily pass through theV eye of the finest needle.
It will be seen that, by making a die, the whole plate may be cut at once, and it can be ornamented in anyl manner desirable.
I arn'aware that a device --for cutting or breaking thread, so constructed as to be applied to a spool, is not new also, that a device provided with springs, which enter the oriiice of the spool, for connecting the two, is known.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is`
As an article of manufacture, the within-described thread-breaker, formed from sheet-inetal, its retainingparts, a a, being out from its centre, and bent at right angles thereto, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 22d day of July, 1868.
JNO. W. MURRELL. Witnessesz Amos COLE, R. H. MGKIM.
