Description

P. s. GLYARKSON. Bedstead Fastening.
No. 228,728. l Patented June 15; 1880.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK S. OLARKSON, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
B EDSTEAD-FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,728, dated June 15, 1880.
Application filed September 20, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK S. OLARKSON, of Baltimore city, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedstead-Fastenings5 and I hereby declare the same to be fully, clearly, and exactly de scribed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of the device; Fig. 2, a perspective view, illustrating its Inode of attachment to the side rail and post.
My invention has reference to that class of devices in use for securing` the side rails of bedsteads to the posts, and it has for its object to furnish an article of that class affording increased facility for securing it to the side rail.
In the accompanying drawings, A is a metallic plate, which may either be a malleable casting or be punched from sheet metal, and having a rin g-shaped piece, l), at one side and a pair of hooks, a a, at the other. The ring b is not complete, having a straight face, b', next the plate A, which latter is provided with projections c c' on a line with the face b.
To insert the device, the inner face of the side rail, B, is routed to a depth equal to the thickness of thev plate A by means of an an` nular auger or equivalent device, the center of the cut being at x, and its width being accurately that of the ring b. By these means the face b is made to abut against the end of the rail, as shown, preventing the device from rotating-acontingencythatisfurtherguarded against by the projections c. A plate, B', is
screwed on over the device, as shown in Fig. 2, holding it in place.
The post C is mortised at e by means of a circularI saw or otherwise, and pins c c are driven transversely therethrough at the proper points to receive the hooks a a.. The inner faces of the latter are somewhat inclined, so as to draw the parts together as they engage with the pins.
Instead of two hooks, a a, one only may be used, the device then, having the shape indicated by the dotted line d.
The sides of the device being plane, and it being of uniform thickness, it fits snuglyin the mortises and makes a neat and efficient device. rlhe points c', projecting beyond the edges of the device and abutting against the face of the side rail at the extreme radius of the ring, afford perfect security against the partial rotation of the ring and abrasion or compression of the edge of the rail in contact with the side b', which without them would take place.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Abedstead-fastenin g consisting of the plate A, of uniform thickness, having one or more hooks and an incomplete 1ing,'b,and provided with points or projections abutting against the face of the rail on the outer edge of the ring, whereby rotation of the ring is prevented, as set forth.
Witness my hand this 10th day of September, 1879. c
FRANK S. OLARKSON. Witnesses:
