UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMEs OURRAN, OF BINGHAMTON, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN NUT-LOCKS.
, Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 177,380, dated May 16, 1876; application filed January 29, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES GURRAN, of Binghamton, Broome county, New York, have invented an Improvement in Nut Locks, of which the following is a specification: n
The object of my invention is to prevent nuts working loose on their bolts, and to secure said nuts firmly in position by the combination of holes 0 c in the nut B, and the slot bin the end of the bolt A, together with the key or pin a, as shown by the accompanying drawing. The nut Bis held in position by the key a, which extends through the holes 0 o in the nut, and which also extends through the The key is made of annealed wire, of suitable size, with a head upon one end, and when said key is placed in position it is retained there by being headed down or clinched on the end opposite the head. The slot 1) is made of any suitable width and of any depth required, to allow of the nut being turned on the bolt to any distance required. The holes 0 c are made of an y suitable size to receive thekey, and there may the nut may be locked in any position required. r
' In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bolt, with the nut locked in position. Fig. 2 is a side view of the bolt, with the nut removed, showing the slot 1). Fig. 3 is a top view of a nut, with the key a in position, and showing additional holes a c by the dotted lines for the key. Fig. 4 is the key.
I claim as my invention- The combination of a lock-nut, B, having radial holes 0 through its outer portion, the diametrical open slot b in the end of the bolt A, and a key,'a, said open slot being of a depth sufficient to receive and act as a bearing 'for said inserted key when the nut is screwed in place.
JAMES GURRAN.
