JOHN M. RICI-IENS, 0F JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA.
CORNER-HOLDER FOR FRAMES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 19, 1916.
Application filed March 29, 1915. Serial No. 17,748.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN M. Rrornms, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jacksonville, in the county of Duval and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corner-Holders for Frames, of which the following is a specification. 1
This invention relates to devices for holding the corners of frames, more particularly screen frames and like devices, and has for one of its objects to provide a simply constructed device whereby the members of the frame may be firmly supported and locked together at the corners and applied by any person without previous skill or knowledge.
Another object of the invention is to provide .a simply constructed device which may be applied without material structural change to frame members united at their meeting points by a miter joint or a butt joint.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character, whereby the confronting ends of the frame members may be united without any portion of the fass tening devices projecting into the interior of the frame.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described, and then specifically pointed out in the claims; and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of a frame with the confronting terminals united by a miter joint with the improvement applied; Fig. 2 is an edge view of the parts shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a detached perspective view of the improved combined holding and locking device; Fig. 4 is a view of theblank from which the improved attachment is constructed.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawings by the same reference characters.
The improved device is preferably constructed of sheet metal and includes a flat substantially triangular shaped .body portion 10 having. a plurality of clefts in its edges, that portion of the material through which the clefts are formed being bent at right angles to the body, 119 alternat l I dotted lines 17 in opposite directions to form attaching,
flanges 11, as shown. The forms of the bent over portions or flanges 11 may be varied to any required extent to adapt the device to the form and size of the frame members. The .body portion 10 is also provided with securing straps or tongues 12 of greater length and width than the flanges 11 and adapted to extend across the sides of the frame members to which the device is applied, as best shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
Portions of the frame members are represented at 14-45 and united by a miter joint, the device being applicable without material structural change to any form of joint. The bent over portions or flanges 11 are engaged with the edges of the frame members and also secured by nails or screws, as shown. By this means, the frame members are securely locked in position and require no other fastening than the nails or screws above mentioned.
When the device is formed as shown in Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, the attaching flanges 11 are bent along the dotted lines 16, as
illustrated in Fig. 4, at right angles to the body 10 and in opposite directions to each other, while the securing straps or tongues 12 are first bent at right angles to the body 10 along the dotted lines 16 and in opposite directions thereto, and then again bent in parallel relation to the body 10 along the the securing straps or tongues 12 will ex tend across the opposite side faces of the members 14l15 at the abutting ends of the This will produce a device 2 miter joint, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The
holding screws or other suitable fastening devices will then be employed to fasten the tongues or flanges to the members 1415,
and similar fastening devices will likewise be employed through the members 1415 and the body portion 10. By this simple means, the members 1fi-15 are firmly united and supported and firmly locked in position. 7
' Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A corner fastener for frames comprising a plate adapted to fit Within a kerf formed 'in the abutting ends of adjacent frame members and provided with reversely V to'fit within a kerf formed in-abutting ends of adjacent frame members and provided with reversely bent attaching flanges embracing the outer edges of the frame members, the right angle edges of'the plate being formed with securing straps which extend along the sides of the frame members and across the junction of the abutting ends thereof and the edge of the plate opposite I the right angle being entirely housed within the kerf of said frame members.
3. A corner fastener for frames comprising a plate adapted to fit within a kerf formed in the abutting ends of adjacent frame members and provided with reversely bent attaching flanges embracing the outer edges of the frame members said plate being formed with securing straps disposed at Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the right angles to each other and extending along the sides of the frame members and across the junction of the abutting ends thereof, V V
' 4Q Acorner fastener for frames comprising a substantially triangular'plate adapted to fit within a'kerfformed in the abutting ends of adjacent frame members and having its right angle edges bent in opposite directions to form attaching flanges there being securing straps extending laterally from the plate at the inner ends of the attaching flanges and extending along the sides of'the frame members and across the junction of the abutting ends thereof. 5. As a new article ofmanufacture, a corner fastener for frames comprising a substantially triangular plate having two of its edges reversely bent to provide attaching flanges, there being securing straps projecting from opposite sides of the plate at the inner ends of the attaching flanges and arranged at substantially right angles to each other, each securing strap at its junction with the body of the plate being provided with a shoulder which spaces the free end of the strap from the adjacent side of the plate.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
