SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,424, dated May 5, 1885.
Application filed January 24, 1885. (No model.)

Be it known that I, NELLIE S. STOWELL a citizen of the United States, residing at New 'the special manner of making the same.
The principal objects of my invention are the ready and perfect sharpening of shears and scissors, and the sharpening of knives. In addition to these, a small screw-driver is attached to this device, which is so constructed that these various purposes are served by one simple and practical tool, which combines the advantages of cheapness, lightness, durability, and compactness. Hitherto these various articles have usually been constructed separately, or, if in combination, they have generally been difficult to manage, or unpractical, or occupied too great an amount of space for convenience, or were liable to get out of order, besides being expensive, and in some cases positively injurious to the articles upon which they were used. The object of my improved invention, therefore, is to provide a small, compact, and durable article constructed'on scientific principles, and furnished to the public at a very triiiing cost, and designed to do the work which it has heretofore required several separate instruments to accomplish and in a much more satisfactory manner, and, in addition, being an invention which is so arranged as to be readily carried in the pocket, thus being always conveniently at hand for use when required.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, the figure represents the general plan of the device.
The angle indicated by B and B2 shows that portion of the invention which is designed for sharpening scissors or shears, B being a steel bar with a roughened surface, or with fine corrugations, over which the blades of the shears are passed, either backward or forward, B2 being the guide against which the flat side of the blade is held during the process of sharpenin 0.
O C represents two pieces of metal, either one or both, with corrugations similar to those described in B', and are so placed that the blade of Y a knife may be by pressure inserted between them and sharpened by being drawn through in either direction.
D denotes that portion of the projecting bar to be used as a screw-driver, the end being flattened and finished for that purpose.
In constructing my invention I do not wish to confine myself strictly to the form illustrated by the drawing, or to the precise arrangement of the parts mentioned, or to the specifled number of parts, as described, and I claim the right to vary the article in form or size, or to omit any of its parts or attachments, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention and the manner of constructing and using the same, I would have it understood that I am aware of the construction shown in Patent No. 207,339, and also of No. 147,410, the latter claiming to sharpen shears by passing the blades over a steel pin; but 1n y invention differs from this in that it does not make a dat edge upon the inner edge of the angle of the blades, thereby destroying their original shape and conformation, but preserves the said angle upon which all approved patterns of scissors or shears are originally ground.
Being aware, as aforesaid, that such inventions have been made, I desire to state that to these or any part of them I make no claim, broadly; but
What I do claim as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
An implement for sharpening scissors and shears, consisting of a single rod or bar with a roughened sh arpenin gsurface,the end of said rod or bar being bent, substantially as shown and described, to form a guide for the flat side of the blade at a suitable angle to the sharpening-surface.V
