neuron .Fon SEARFEIFILTG scissors, an]: nrxncurrnve IMPLEMENTS.
grea e,
Be it known that 'IQAUGUsT BERGER FLO- naom-va' subjectof the KingofSweden, residing at 14 John Williamson street, .South Shields, in the county of Durham, England, have invented new and useful lmprovements in Devices for Sharpening Knives, Scissors,
and l ke Getting Imp ements, whi h following is a Specification.
This invention relates to devices for sharpening knives, scissors and like cutting implements, and particularly to devices of the kind comprising an abrasive rod-like sharpening member inclosed in a tube forming or attached to a holder, said tube having slots arranged so as to guide the blade or blades to be sharpened against the abrasive rod at the requisite angle. The object of the present invention is to provide an improved sharpening device whereby the blade or blades of knives or scissors will be more efficiently sharpened.
According to this invention I make the abrasive sharpening member in two parts capable of angular movement about a common axis so that, immediately the edge of the blade to be sharpened is inserted in the guide slot in the tube and pressed against the sharpening member therein, one part of said member is turned about the common axis so that its abrading face lies parallel with the edge of the blade while the latter is sharpened by being drawn to and fro across said face.
In the accompanying drawings which i1- lustrate my invention- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the parts of one construction of abrasive sharpening member in accordance with my invention; and
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the parts assembled together.
Figs. 3 and 4 are similar views to Figs. '1 and 2 respectively illustrating a modified construction.
Fi 5 is a plan, Fig. 6 an elevation and Fig. a developed elevation of one construction of sharpening device fitted with my improved sharpening member; and
Figs. 8, 9 and 10, are similar views to Figs. 5, 6 and 7 respectively illustrating another form of sharpening device fitted with my improved sharpening member.
Referring first to Figs. 1 and 2, the sharp- Spc cifif catieii of I iettersQEatent.

vening member therein illustrated comprises two} steel plates a, Z) having abradingfaces '0, d and end lugs e, 7 through which is passed a common pivot pin 9. It will be seenthat, when th'eparts are assembled as Ishown in Fig; 2, the plates at, b are free to oscillateabout the pivot g which forms a common axis for the two plates.
Figs. 3 and 4 illustrate a modified con struction of sharpening member wherein the plate a is provided with a semi-circular groove h with which is adapted to engage a semi-circular rib j on the other plate 6. The plates at, b, when engaged as shown in Fig. 4, are free to oscillate about the rib j which forms a common axis for the two plates.
In use, and as shown in Figs. 5 to 10, the sharpening member a, b is slipped into a tube is so that its pivot g or 7' lies along the axis of the tube. A screw plug m is provided to retain the sharpening member a, within the tube is of Figs. 5, 6 and 7. The tube 70 may be provided with a handle such as n (Figs. 5 and 6), but, where the sharpening device is particularly intended for sharpening scissors, I prefer to provide the tube is with horns 0, 79 (Figs. 8, 9 and 10). The horns 0, p are adapted to be engaged by the first finger and thumb of one hand while the scissors to be sharpened are held in the other hand. The sharpening member will be retained in the tube is of Figs. 8, 9 and 10 by the finger and thumb, but, if desired, screw plugs similar to m may be provided at each end of said tube. The tube 7: is provided with guiding slots g, 7- cut at an angle to the axis of the tube, the slots 9 being intended to receive the blades of a pair of scissors and the slots 1* (Figs. 6 and 7) the blade of a knife, and the blade of the knife or the blades of the scissors to be sharpened is or are inserted in these slots, pressed against the sharpening member a, b, and drawn to and fro across the abrading faces 0, a? of same.
Immediately the edge of the blade being sharpened comes into contact with the sharpening member, it turns one or the other of the two parts a; or b about its pivot g or 57' so that its abrading face 0 or 0? lies parallel to the edge of the blade during the motion of said edge across said face, and a good sharpening sheet is thus obtained, the reciprocation of the blade during sharpening causing a rocking of the members a, b about their common axis.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device for sharpening the blades of cutting implements comprising co-acting sharpening members which are hinged to gether and blade guiding means associated with the said members.
2. A device for sharpening the blades of cutting implements comprising co-acting sharpenin members which are hinged together an have relatively inclined abrad ing surfaces.
3. A device for sharpening the blades of cutting implements comprising co-acting sharpening members which are hinged together and have relatively inclined abradmg surfaces, and blade guiding means associated with the said members.
4. A device for sharpening the blades of cutting implements comprising co-acting sharpenin members which are hinged together an have relatively inclined abrading surfaces and a casing for the said members provided with guide slots through which the respective abrading surfaces are exposed.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this s ecification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
AUGUST BERGER FLOBAOK.
