Specificationof Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 4, 1916.
Application lcd January 2.9, 1915. Serial No. 5,102.
To (IZZ whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, x'rnoxv J. Pnuxosrn, a ,citizen of the United States, residing at Dwight, in the county of Butler and State of Nebraska, have invented certainY new and useful Improvements in Knife-Sharpeners, ofvhich the following is a specification.
My invention relates to sharpening devicesand more particularly to a device for sharpening knives or (ther cutlery..
The primary object of this invention resides in the provision of a knife slrarpener embrdying spaced resilient arms for sup porting abrading means on the adjacent inner faces thereof, the arms being bent outwardly above the abrading means to provide finger engaging portions whereby when these portions are engaged by the fingers of the operator and pressed together, the fricthe abrading means and a knife or (ther implement. movable therebetween. will be consequently increased. l
A still further object of my invention resides in the provision of a device of the character described thatis simple in construction, efficient in operation and one that can be manufactured and placed on the market at a minimum cest.
Other objects as well as the nature. characteristic features and scope of my invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim forming a part of this specification.
In the drawings: Fig-ure 1 represents a perspective view of my invention. the dotted lines showing a knife associated therewith. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal, sectional view of my invention. i Fig. 8 represents a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2 in the direction in which the arrow points.v
Referring more particularly to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate like or corresponding parts throughout the different views, I provideniv improved supporting means or holder which in this instance is formed preferably from a single strip of sheet metal bent intermediate its ends int a substantially U-shaped configuration. the vertex being arranged into a substantially cylindrical formation to provide a bow spring 1, the arms 2 and 3 of the holder extending from the spring being arranged in spaced parallel relation with each 'portions 5 for a purpose to be hereinafter referred to.
In order to provide a suitable means for sharpening the blade of a knife or other piece of cutlery I have provided oblong file blocks 6 and have removably secured the said blocks to the inner surface of the arms by means ofscrews or like fastening devices 7 which pass through the'opening 8 in the arms and engage the rear surfaces of the blocks 6. Attention is directed to the peculiar manner in which the blocks are arranged between the arms. inner ends thereof are arranged in substantial alinement with the point of juncture of the arms with the spring and the outer ends extend slightly above the plane of the outer edges of the finger engaging portions 5. The linger engaging portions 5 are bent outwardlv at the points 4. the said points being positioned at a point substantially intermediate the'inner and outer ends of the blocks. By this arrangement an equal amount of pressure may at all times be arranged on the blccks while a knife or other piece of cutlery is being sharpened. .Furthermore due to the resiliency of the material from which the arms are formed the finger engaging portions may be pressed t0- ward each other when it is desired to in-' crease the friction between the blocks at the outer ends thereof. The blocks have their extreme o-uter ends beveled as at 9 thus affording a suitable surface whereby the fingers of the user, not shovvn,l are adapted to engage should a strong pressure on the block be desired. A set screw eve 10 is removably engaged in the spring and constitutes a suitable means for supporting the holder on a nail or the like, not shown.
The operation of my invention is as follows: A knife or other piece of cutlery is placed between the spaced surfaces of the abrading blocks 6 and slid transversely therebetween, the holder being held in one hand of the operator, not shown, during this friction between the, abrasive blocks, the 4 fingers of the hand which engage the holder' are engaged upon the finger portions 5 and pressed together,I 4to consequently canse the blocks to more liriniy engage the sides of the knife. Shruld it be desired to replace the blocks 6 v en they have become worn it is only necessary to remove the screws 7 and replace new blocks, the operation being obvious.
Although I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention I do not wish to limit niyselt1v to the exact structure shown, however, particular attention is directed to the peculiar arrangement (inthe-finger portions 5 in the manner in which they copei'ate with the abrading blocks for producing an efficient means for governing the friction between the device when in operation.
From the above description taken in connection with the. accompanying drawings, it can easily be seen that I have provided a device that is simple in construction, containing' but a few simple parts that can be cheaply manufactured and assembled and when assembled can be' placed upon the market. and Sold at a minimum cost.
It will be understood that the above dcscription and accompanying drawings coinpreliend only the general embodiment o'l niy invention and that various minor Y changes in detail of construction, proportiox.
and arrangement of the parts may be made within the scope of the appended claim and without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention. l
Having thus Jfully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A knife Sharpener formed from a single strip of sheet metal including a pair of parallel spaced resilient supporting' arms, Alornied by bending the metal upon itself, a bow spring provided at the bend, a file block associated with the inner surfaces of each of the arms, fastei'iinfrv devices for removably holding` the blocks on the arms, finger engaging portions formed by bending the outer ends. ofy the arms outwardly from a point substantially intermediate the ends of the block and engageablby Vthe lingers of the operator for pressing the blocks together for consequently increasing the fric tion of the blocks with a tool.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signa ture in presence of-two witnesses.
