EMMOR M. MALLETTE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SHARZPENING DEVICE.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented M: y '7. 191
Application filed May 10, 1911 Serial No..626,348.
Ghieago,-in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sharpening Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to sharpening devices especially adapted for household use, and of that character embodying adjustable metal cutting disks supported by means which form guides through which knives and other implements may be moved against the cutting disk and sharpened.
The object of my invent-ion is to provide a neat and practical sharpener which may be fastened to'any suitable supportand adapted to various sizes and characters of implements that requiresharpeni'ng.
Another objectof my invention is to provide a device in which the parts are so arranged as to produce a long bevel upon tlel implement, resulting in a thin sharp e ge.
With these and other objects which will be made apparent, my invention resides in the features of construction and arrangement to be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device, secured'in operative position, and Fig. 2 is. a rear elevation thereof slightly enlarged. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the sharpening disk, detached.
Referring now to these figures, my improved device comprises a supporting member whichconsists of a wire bent to form spaced and substantially parallel extensions 5, "between which a headed fastening member, such as a screw 6'as shown in Fig. 1, may be extended into a suitable support. The extremities 6"" of this wire support are bent to upstand and slightly diverge from one another.
The holding plate 7 is provided with lower side wings 8 which, as shown, are
. bent inwardly to extend around the upstanding supporting wire, portionstit, and to thus hold said plate in position. This plate is further provided with an indented central portion 9 similar in shape to the hardened metal cutting disk 10, which I preferably form polygonal with a plurality of straight sides, as shown in the drawing, for a purpose to be hereinafter described. -This disk 10 is adapted" to be placed in the indented portion9 of the'holding plate 7, and when in such position, as particularly shown in Fig. 1, its extreme side portions extend beneath the upstanding supporting wire portions 6, which cooperate with" the holding plate to adjustably andremovably hold'the disk in position. The holding plate 7 is also provided with upper side wings 11 which are flared or bent in a direction opposite to that of the lower wings 8 and which cotiperate with the upper ends of the upstanding supporting wire portions 6 to form guides between which the blade to be sharpened may be moved against the contiguous straight edge of the sharpening disk, and formed with a long bevel in order that it may be given a very sharp edge. The holding plate 7 is also provided with an upper central cut-out portion 12, the'base 13 of which extends slightly below the corresponding straight edge of the sharpening disk 10, and the sides of which cut-out portion form guides for the blades of scissors or other instruments, the edges of which have only very slight bevels.
Fig. 1 shows the device in position ready for operation, and when in such position it is only necessary to slightly flex the holding plate 7, in order that the cutting disk 10 may be removed and readjusted so that selcctedones of its straight sides may be brought into position opposite the several guides, or that a new disk may be substi tuted.
I claim:,
1. The combination or a supporting mem" her having upstanding portions, a holding plate having means to engage said upstanding portions, and a polygonal sharpening disk supported upon one surface of said plate, and having its side portions extending between the plate and said upstanding portions of said support, said disk being removable for readjustment to place selected ones of its sides in operative position.
2. The combination of a supporting nu-mstanding portions of said support, said sharpening disk being polygonal and being removable for, readjustment to present selected ones of its sides opposite the said blade guides. I
' 3. The combination of a supporting member having upstanding portions, a polygonal sharpening disk, a holding plate having means to engage said upstanding portions ofsaid support, and cooperate with-said upstanding portions of said support to clasp the said sharpening disk therebet-ween, said holding plate having guides and being provided with portions which also cooperate with said upstanding portions of said support, to form other guides.
4:. The combination of a supporting member comprising a wire bent to form spaced extensions adapted to be secured to a suitable support, and having its extremities bent to upstand, a holding plate having lower side wings bent inwardly about the lower portions of said upstanding extremities, and provided withupper side wings bent in an opposite direction, said holding plate being also provided With'an upper cut-0ut portion, the sides of which form guides, and having a central indented vportion, the sides of which extend beneath the upstanding wire extremities, and a polygonal sharpening disk disposed within said centrally indented portion of said holding plate, and removable for readjustment to place a new working port-ion in operative position.
In testimony whereof I atfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
