Patented July 20, 1937 UNETED STATES SCISSORS SHARPENER Steven A. Mischanski, Wallingtcn, N. 3., assignor of one-half to Mary Konikowski, Wallington,
Application February 11, 1936, Serial No. 63,328
1 Claim.
According to this invention a device for sharpening scissors, shears or other fiat-bladed tool having an edge or edges beveled to substantially the same angle as the edges of scissors or shears is provided which can be manufactured at little cost and which, including a file or the like sharpening element contained in a case, permits shifting of such element so as to bring a fresh region thereof into use when the previously used region thereof becomes unduly worn away,
In the drawing,
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the device and of scissors in position to have one blade thereof sharpened;
Fig. 2 is a plan of the device;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof;
Fig. 4 is a section thereof on line i4, Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 shows the sharpening element; and
Figs. 6 and '7 show the blanks from which the case is formed.
The case is formed in two sections of stiif sheet material, as metal.
The main section is formed from the generally rectangular blank shown in Fig. 6 and which is adapted to be bent on the dotted lines to form a bottom wall I, two upstanding side walls 2, upstanding end walls 3 and 4, a top Wall 5 extending from wall 3 over the bottom wall, and a flange 6 upstanding from the inner margin of the top wall at an obtuse angle, the ears shown at 1 being bent over the top wall as shown.
The other section is formed from the blank of stifi sheet material shown in Fig. 7 and adapted to be bent on the dotted lines to form a top wall 8, a down-turned end wall 9, a flange M which upstands from the opposite margin of the top wall at an acute angle to the latter, and side wings H which are bent downwardly and then toward each other. Top wall 8 has a slot 805 midway between the two wings and extending at a right angle to and reaching from a point near flange ID to a point near wall 9.
The sharpening element here comprises a rectangular shell E2 of sheet material in which is clamped between opposed walls l2a of the shell a file l3, one wall 120, having an upstanding centrally disposed tongue 14. This element lengthwise of its walls lZa is of a dimension slightly less than that between side walls 2 of the main case section and transversely of its said walls is of a dimension considerably less than that between walls 3 and 4 of said section but greater than the length of slot 860. Its depth is slightly less than that of the case.
The three parts are assembled as follows: The
(C1. Vii-82.2)
sharpening element is placed in the main section as shown, or so that its tongue l4 relatively adjoins the wall 3. Then the other section of the case being placed on the main section so that its flange l adjoins and forms a slot :1: with the flange 6, its wall 9 outwardly abuts wall 4 of the main section and its slot 8a, receives tongue M, the wings it are bent down and under the main section and clamp said other section permanently in place. Thus a shallow case is formed whose bottom is wall l, whose top is formed by Walls and 8 and whose side walls 2 confine the sharpening element against angular displacement in its own plane, such element being confined against displacement out of said plane between guiding portions of the case formed here by its said top and bottom; said element is free in the case, but I prefer to provide it with the tongue which, by penetrating the slot, affords means for holding said element in the position to which it is shifted.
The side walls 2 have notches IS in registry with the slot 9: to permit the edge of the blade in to be sharpened (if its length is greater than the device) to reach the sharpening element. The flanges 6 and I0 are arranged at the proper angle, substantially parallel with each other, so that when the blade 0. is contained in slot :1: its beveled surface will be in face to face relation to the sharpening surface of said element.
The blade being placed in slot :1: and held with its beveled surface in contact with the abrading element a reciprocating movement, one relatively to the other, as between the device and the blade is effected, thus filing away said surface of the blade.
When a portion of the surface of the abrading element wears away it may be shifted, as through the medium of its tongue, to bring another portion of its said surface into opposition to slot :c.
I might form the case of a single blank, but when it is formed, as shown, to comprise a main section, which includes a bottom wall and a top wall 5 only partially covering the bottom wall and another section which covers the remainder of the bottom and forms with said top wall a slot, as m, and one section has wings, as I2, toclamp it to the other section, a stout structure is produced with the use of comparatively thin sheet material.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim is:
The hereindescribed tool sharpening device comprising, in combination with a case formed in two sections of stiff sheet material, one section being formed from a substantially rectangular blank bent upon itself to form a bottom wall and a top wall partially covering and spaced from the bottom Wall and the other section covtion having portions spacing said other section from said bottomg wall and one section having opposite wings bent around the other section and clamping said sections together, and a sharpening element arranged in the case upon the bottom Wall and under the slot.
