IMPROVEMENT lN LUBRICATORS FOR RAILWAY-CAR AXLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 11 1,286, dated January 24, 1871.
I, IsAAC P. WENDELL, of the city of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Lubricators for Railroad-Oar Journals, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention consists in the combination of a strip of felt or webbing' with 'a concave metal plate, which is held up beneath the journal by means of a spring resting in the car-box. The ends of the felt pass up through a slot in the plate, and are contined thereto by means of rivets or otherwise. The plate has two clips, formed in cutting out the slots, which clips confine it to the spring in two opposite places, and two other clips at right angles to the Iirst, formed by cutting and bending cross-strips at the edges of the plate, as hereinafter described.
To enable others to make and use my improved lubricator, I will now give a full description thereof.
In the accompanying drawing, which makes a part of this specification, Figures 1 and 2 are vertical sections, at right angles to each other, ofthe lubricator. Fig. 3, Sheet No. 2, is a reversed plan ofthe lubricator.
Like letters in all the figures indicate the same parts.
Ais the curved plate, formed of sheet metal, having a longitudinal slot, a, through which the ends of a strip offelt or webbing are passed. The ends of the strip are confined to the plate, at the upper edges of the same, by means of rivets b.
The lower and double portion of the strip B lies on the bottom plate of the box, and takes of the strip, and is fed thereby to the journal for lubricating the same.
Two single strips of felt, B, may be usedinstead of the double strip, if desired, the oper ation being the same.
The plate A and spring C are connected together by means ot' the clips d d and d d'. The former are made out of the strip formed in cutting out the slot a of the plate, two sides forming the sides of the slot being cut, the strip then cut in the middle and bent each way, forming the clips and the ends to the slots. The clips d d' are formed :ina similar manner by cutting slits at right angles to the edges of the plate A and bending the strips, as shown in the drawing.
The plate A is provided with a clip, e, at one end, which is merely for the purpose of manipulation.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The curved plate A, having a longitudinal slot, a., and clips d d and d d', in combination with the spring O and felt or webbing B, all arranged and operating substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
