IMPROVEM ENT IN MUSTACHE-GUARDS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 214,063, dated April 8, 1879; application filed July 27,1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, ISAAC M. THATOHER and JAMES DECKER, of Cleveland, iii the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mustache-Guards; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

Our invention relates to an improvement in mustache-guards; and consists in forming a guard that may be readily applied to any tumbler, cup, 850., said guard being formed of metal or other suitable substance in two parts, made adjustable the one upon the other, so as to suit any size of tumbler or cup, and to conform with its curvature. each piece being provided with projecting flanges or lips, by which the device is secured to the rim of a cup or tumbler, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view, and Fig. 2 a perspective view, of a' mustacheguard embodying the features of our invention.

A is a tumbler or cup. B B are the two pieces which constitute our mustache-guard. B are lips or projecting flanges whereby the guard may be secured to a cup or tumbler. The pieces B B are secured together by a pin, screw, or rivet, O, which is secured in one of the plates and passes through a slot, 0', in the other plate, so as to admit of the two plates being adjusted one upon the other, so as to conform to the size of any tumbler or cup that may be used.

Now, it is apparent that, if this adjustmen is simply longitudinal the one upon the other, the curvature of the tumbler or cup would cause the guard to bind if the parts were adjusted either too near together or too far apart.

For this reason the plates B B have a circumferential adjustment about the pin 0 as a center. By this double adjustment the flange or lip B may be made to fit, Without binding, a cup or tumbler of any size or curvature.

We are aware that it has been proposed heretofore to make mustache-guards of a central piece with side adjustable pieces, which side pieces, however, have an adjustment only in one direction-i. 0., toward or from each other.

In the device shown in the drawings the lips B are formed from a plate of which the mustache-guard itself is formed, being struck from the said plate and turned down to a suitable angle. This, however, is not necessary, for a suitable lip or flange might be soldered or riveted to the mustache-guard; orit might, in any other suitable way, be secured to the rim or edge of the cup, the said fastening not being an essential part of our invention.

What we claim is- 1. Amustache-guard composed of two parts, one part provided with an elongated slot, and the other connected therewith by means of a pin, rivet, or screw extending through said slot, whereby the guard may be increased or decreased in length, and also adjusted on curves of different radii, substantially as set forth.

2. A mustache guard consisting of the parts B B, each provided with flanges or lips B said parts being adjustably secured together by a pin, rivet, or screw, C, extending through an elongated slot, 0, substantially as set forth.
