PATENT OFFICE.
ATHELSTANH. CHRISTIE, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
. HINGE.
SPEGIFICATIQNfor-ming part of Letters Patent No. 751,461, dated February 9, 1904. i
A Application filed January 10, 1903. Serial No. 138,528. (He model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ATHnLs'rAN H. CHRISTIE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention has for its object to provide simple economical hinges, especially designed for the baggage trade in the manufacture of What are now generally known as suit-cases; and it consists in such a hinge having the peculiarities of detail particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed, the employment of hinges in accordance with my invention serving to improve the construction of suit-cases themselves in the particulars hereinafter described.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents an inner end view of a corner form of hinge in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, an elevation of the same; Fig. 3, an outer end view of the hinge; Fig. A, a plan view of said hinge; Figs. 5 and 6, perspective views of the hingeleaves; and Fig. 7, a similar view of a fragment of a suit-case, illustrating an application of the aforesaid hinge.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents one, and B the other, leaf of a suit-case corner-hinge in accordance with my invention. A knuckle b of lea-fA fits between knuckles 0 of leaf B, and a pintle 45 engages the barrel formed by the knuckles. Instead of extending the joint entirely across the hinge it may terminate short of the inner end of same, as herein shown, the leaves of said hinge in its preferred form being provided with outwardly-extendinginner corner quadrant ears. The ear 0 of leaf A is in the path of ear f of leaf B, the arrangement of said ears being such that when the leaves are at a right angle to each other the opening of the hinge is limited to a quartercircle throw.
Leaf A of the hinge is preferably cast with an outer knob g on an inner rivet h, it being also preferable to have the rivet eccentric to leaf A when the hinge is closed. Aperturesj for rivets k are provided in leaf B and its flange, it being also practical to provide leaf A with a rivet-aperture if the rivet habove specified is not desirable. By making the leaf A with a rivet, as herein set forth, a saving of time results in the setting of the hinge, and the outer knob of said leaf serves as a support for the suit-case to which said hinge is applied. 1
The leaf A is made fast to the body 0 of a suit-case and leaf B to the lid D of same, the flange i of the latter leaf being parallel to the end of said lid outside the same, and the hingejoint is also made to come outside the suit-case, so as to obviate the cutting of said case to fit the hinge.
By employing hinges such as the one herein shown and described the leather of the body and lid of a suit-case can be made continuous, and said hinges not only have their own function, but also serve in the place of corner-protecting castings on a suit-case. The leaves of each hinge on a suit-case are at a right angle.
claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A suit -'case corner-hinge comprising 'two leaves having knuckles thereof on a pintle and one of the leaves provided with an end flange at a right angle thereto, this leaf being attachable to the lid of the suit-case to have its flange It is also to be apparallel to an end of said lid outside the same,
whereby said flange serves as a corner-protector, the other leaf being attachable to the body of the suit-case to be in the path of the 5 aforesaid flange and at a right angle to the former leaf when said case is closed.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, in the presence of two Witnesses.
A. H. CHRISTIE. Witnesses:
N. E. OLIPHANT, B. C. ROLOFI.
