NATHAN THOMPSON, OF BROOKLYN, E. D., NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 84,655, dated December 1,1868.
. IMPROVEMENT IN Boxns 'ro con-mm CIGARS, MONEY, 84c.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concemf Be it known that I, NATHAN THOMPSON, of Brooklyn, E. D., in the county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boxes for Containing Money, Cigars, and other articles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact -description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, and in Which- Figure 1 represents a side view cfa box of cylindrical form, constructed in accordance with my improvement, and 7 Figures 2and 3, sections, at right angles to each other, of the same.
Figure. 4 is a longitudinal section of a similarly-constructed box, made of an oblong or rectangular form. This improvement consists in constructing boxes, designed mainly for pocket-use, and serving to carry money, cigars, or other articles, with a lid or cover, pivoted to opposite sides of v the box, and moving, to open and close the box, over a mouth-surface, which is concentric to the pivots.
Referring, in the first instance, to figs. 1, 2, and 3 of the accompanying drawing, A represents a cylin; drical-shaped box,- made of metal or other suitable material, and having an opening or mouth, a, in its periphery.
B is a lid or cover, ofcurvilinear" shape, corresponding to the periphery of the box, and pivoted, by side arms I) b, to the shell or box, on the outside thereof, at its centre, so that, by swinging said lid to the position represented for it by red lines in fig. 3, the'mouth a is uncovered or opened, while, by adjusting or swinging it to the position indicated for it by black lines, said mouth is covered or closed.
The one end of the mouth a may be turned up, as at c, to form a stop to the lid when closed; or any other suitable stop may be provided; also, if desired,
-a finther stop may be finnished, for arresting the motion of the lid when fully open.
The side arms I) b may be pivoted to the shell 01' box, either by rivets, cl, as shown in the drawing, or by merely punching the sides of the box and side arms, in such manner as to form hollow protnberances,.which serve as. rivets for uniting or pivoting the lid and shell together.
A box constructed substantially as described, with reference to figs. 1, 2, and 3, may. he very advantageously employed as a pocket-device for carrying: money.
In fig. 4 of the drawing, the box orcase A is made of oblong or rectangular form, with its mouth or opening a at its one end, which is made of a sweep, as at as, with, it may be, the sides cut away, as at x.
The lid B is of curvilinear form, corresponding to the sweeps s s, and pivoted, by side arms I) b, to the sides of the case, as in the box of cylindrical shape, and operating in like manner, to open and close the mouth a, said lid swinging either to one or both sides to sheet the opening, and working, if desired, in connection with suitable stops, to control its opening and closing actions.
Said box or case, with its lid, may be made of metal or othersuitable material. I
Constructed as represented in fig. 4, the box may be used as a cigar-case, but, of course, the shape and uses of the box, as regards the articles it is designed to carry, may be varied.
What is here claimed,'and desired to be secured' by Letters Patent, is'
The combination, with the box or shell A, of the. lid' or cover B, pivoted, by or through side arms b b, to the sides of the box, for operation in relationto the mouth thereof, substantially as shown and described.
Witnesses: NATHAN THOMPSON.
