G. M. WILLIAMS.
DEVICE FOR FORMING MOWER KNIVES.

ATTOR N EY.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE M. \VI'LLIAMS, OF NEWVARK, DELAWARE, ASSIGNOR TO THE WV. L. NASSAU MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
DEVICE FOR FORMING MOWER-KNIVES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340.024 dated April 13, 1886.
Application filed August 18. 1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. GEORGE M. WILLIAMs, a citizen of the United States, residing in Newark, county of New Castle, State of Delaware, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Formers for the Manufacture of Mower-Knives, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which-- Figures 1 and 2 represent side elevations of a former for the manufacture of mower-knives embodying my invention. Figs. 3 and 4 represent a top view thereof. Fig. 5 represents a bottom view thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts of the several figures.
My invention consists of a former for imparting a spiral shape to a mower-knife, the 1 same operating effectively and conveniently, as will be hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the drawings. A represents a stock having a spiral groove, B, and (l represents a pressing-bar, the same being of spiral form. coinciding with thegroove B. Thelower end of the bar 0 is pivoted to the bottom of the stock A by means of a pivoted strap or link, D, and the upper end of said bar is connected with a lever, E, the latter being pivoted to the top of the stock, it being noticed that said upper end of the bar carries a stud or pin, F, which enters a slot, G, in the adjacent end of the lever E.
It will be seen that owing to the link D the Serial No. 174.683. (N0 model.)
bar 0 is permitted to separate from the face of the stock A to a considerable extent, and when the bar is closed it winds around the stock A. Consequently when a bar of metal from which a mower-knife is to be made is inserted between the stock and bar and the latter is properly operated it closes around said bar of metal, bends it, and forces it into the groove B, thus imparting a spiral twist to the same. The lower end of the bar of metal is primarily held in a recess, B, in the upper face of the bottom of the stock, coinciding with the lower end of the groove B.
Having thus described myinvention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A former for spiral knives, consisting of a stock having a spiral groove, a pressing-bar pivotally connected by a link to the said stock, and a slotted lever pivotally secured to one end of the stock and connected to said pressing-bar, all combined substantially as described.
2. The stock A. having spiral slot B, in combination with the bar 0, having a pin and connected to said stock by the link D, and lever E, having slot G, and pivotally secured to said stock A, all combined substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
GEORGE M. \VILLIAMS.
