MARY E. BEDFORD, OIF WHITE BIRD, IDAHO.
UNDERGARMENT.
Y Specication ofLetters Patent.
Patented Feb. 4, 1919.
Application led March 14, 1918. Serial No. 222,427.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, MARY E. BEDFORD, a
citizen of the United States, residing at White Bird, in the county of Idaho and State' of Idaho, have invented Certain new and useful Improvements in Undergarments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to undery for children.
The primary object of the invention 1s to garments Vprovide an under garment consisting of a waist having means to permit the attachment of stockings and drawers or other nether garments without the use of suspenders.
With the foregoing and other objects 1n view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departingfrom the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a garment constructed in accordance with this invention showing a stocking connected therewith, parts of said stocking being broken away for convenience in illustration, and I Fig. 2 represents a rear elevation of the garment in open position to show the 1nterior construction.
In the embodiment illustrated, an underwaist 1 is shown, composed of any suitable material, preferably of heavy weight cotton, with a skirt or extension Hap 2 formed integral with the front portion thereof and which is provided at its lower edge with a plurality of fastening elements 3, here shown in the form of buttons. These buttons 3 are secured to the skirt or flap 2 by reinforcing strips 11 which are arranged longitudinally of the garment 1 to adapt it to withstand the strains to which it is subjected.
Stockings as 4: arel designed to be connected with the fastening elements 3 and as here shown, these stockings are provided at their upper edges at the rear thereof with a cutout portion 5 and at their front with a reinforcing strip 6. Button holes 7 extend through the strip 6 and the body of the stocking and are designed for coperative engagement with 4the buttons 3 to detachably connect the stocking to the skirt 2.
While the stocking 4 here used, is constructed Vas above described, it will be obvious that if the skirt 2 is extended, stockings of ordinary construction may be used by simply providing coperating fastening elements at their upper edges for use in connection with the elements 3 of the skirt.
A iap or auxiliary skirt 8 is arranged inside skirt 2 and is preferably made shorter than the skirt 2 and has fastening elements 9 along its lower edge for the detachable connection therewith of a pair of net drawers such as are ordinarily used by children.
Buttons or other fastening elements 10 are arranged around the garment 1 at the waist line thereof as is shown clearly in Fig. 1 and are designed for connection thereto by cotton drawers, trousers or skirts, at the will of the user.
As shown, this garment 1 has buttons 12 and button holes 13 at the back for closing the garment, although obviously any other suitable fastening elements may be provided.
A garment constructed as above described dispenses with the use of shoulder straps or Suspenders for connecting trousers in operative position and alsodispenses with the ordinary suspender garters used by children which are objectionable for many reasons. This garment may obviously be readily laundried when necessary and may be composed of any suitable material.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages ofl the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention together with the device which IV now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made as are within the scope of the claimed invention.
I claim 1. A garment of the class described comprising a waist having a depending skirt of uniform length at the front thereof with fastening elements on the outer face of said skirt, and stockings having extensions at their front with curved cut out rear portions skirt,v and completely housed within the skirt, said skirt and Hap terminating at their opposite ends at the. under arm seamsl of saidbody member and having fastening elements on their outer faces at their lower edges` for attachment of nether garments, l5
the rear portion of the body garment being arranged with its lower edge approximately at the waist line of the wearer.
ln testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MARY E. BEDFORD. Witnesses:
A. MORRISON, T. L. DONALDSON.
