Oppfinnelsen skaffer fremgangsmåter for separering av ytterbjerkebark fra innerbjerkebark. Oppfinnelsen skaffer også fremgangsmåte for å isolere betulin, lupeol, betulinsyre, 9,10-epoksy-18-hydroksyoktadekansyre, 9,10,18-trihydroksyoktadekansyre, polyfenolpolymerer og fettsyrer fra bjerkebark.
