본 발명은 텔레비전 스케줄정보를 제공하는 시스템, 특히 텔레비전 프로그램의 액세스 컨트롤 조작 방법 및 장치에 관한 것이다.
텔레비전 스케줄정보를 사용자에게 제공하는 시스템은 시판되고 있다. 예를 들면, 미합중국특허 제 B1 4,706,121 (Young)에 텔레비전 스케줄 시스템 및 프로세스에 대하여 개시되어 있다. 상기 특허의 일실시예에서, 텔레비전 스케줄정보는 사용자의 텔레비전화면 상에 제공된다. 사용자는 상기 특허의 시스템에서 사용되는 선택기준을 공급하여 프로그램선택 등을 할 수 있다. 또한, 상기 특허에 개시된 시스템은 텔레비전 수상기를 제어하여 프로그램을 자동으로 선택할 수 있으며, 텔레비전 스케줄정보 가이드에 리스트된 프로그램을 자동으로 부재 중 녹화할 수 있다. 비디오테이프리코더(VCR) 또는 다른 녹화장치를 제어함으로써 프로그램이 자동으로 부재 중 녹화된다.

바람직한 실시예에 있어서, 텔레비전 스케줄 시스템은 메인 메뉴를 가진다. 사용자는 메인 메뉴로부터 “Parental Control” (퍼렌탈 컨트롤) 메뉴를 선택하여 퍼렌탈 암호를 기입할 수 있다. 퍼렌탈 암호는 메인 메뉴로부터 설정될 수 있다. 퍼렌탈 암호를 설정 및 기입한 후, 사용자는 퍼렌탈 컨트롤 메뉴로부터 채널, 등급, 내용, 및/또는 시간별로 프로그램을 로크아웃(lock-out)할 수 있다. 쇼(show)의 내용 설명은 FCC에 의하여 공급된 V-칩 등급 데이터에 따른 대응 “V-칩” 분류를 추가로 가질 수 있다. 따라서, 사용자는 프로그램을 V-칩 분류에 의하여 또한 로크아웃할 수 있다. 로크된 프로그램으로 튜닝(tuning)하기 위하여, 퍼렌탈 암호가 공급되는 것이 바람직하다.
일실시예에 있어서, 사용자는 메인 메뉴로부터 “컨트롤 보기(control viewing)” 메뉴를 선택하여 구입암호를 기입할 수 있다. 구입암호는 메인 메뉴로부터도 또한 설정될 수 있다. 구입암호를 설정 및 기입한 후, 사용자는 PPV 소비한도를 지정하여 PPV 프로그램의 구입을 제한할 수 있다. 또한, 사용자는 등급 및 내용에 따라 허용된 PPV 프로그램의 유형을 지정할 수 있다. 소비한도를 초과해서 구입하기 위하여는 구입암호가 공급되는 것이 바람직하고, 제한된 프로그램을 구입하기 위하여는 퍼렌탈 암호 및 구입암호 양자 모두가 공급되는 것이 바람직하다.
사용자가 암호를 기억하지 못하는 경우, 사용자는 예를 들면 케이블 오퍼레이터(cable operator)를 부를 수 있다. 케이블 오퍼레이터가 암호를 무효화 시키게 되어 사용자는 새로운 암호를 설정할 수 있다.

도 2b는 퍼렌탈 암호를 메인 메뉴(50)로부터 설정하여 사용자가 정확한 암호를 기입하였을 때 표시되는 퍼렌탈 컨트롤 메뉴(54)의 바람직한 실시예를 나타낸다. 사용자는 채널, 등급 및/또는 내용, 또는 시간별로 TV프로그램을 로크할 수 있다. 사용자가, 예를 들면, 시간별로 로크하기를 원하는 경우, 사용자는 커서를 “시간별 로크(Lock by Time)” 위치로 이동시켜 SELECT키를 입력할 수 있다. 또한, 프로그램이 로크되어 있는 경우, 사용자는 로크되어 있는 모든 프로그램을 로크해제할 수 있다.
도 2c는 사용자가 “채널별 로크 기능”을 선택할 때 표시되는 팝업(56)의 바람직한 실시예를 나타낸다. 바람직한 실시예에 있어서, 팝업(56)에는 사용자가 이용할 수 있는 모든 채널의 리스트가 포함된다. 사용자가 팝업(56)에 들어맞는 채널보다 더 많은 채널을 가진 경우, 사용자는 팝업의 모서리에 표시되는 인디케이터 또는 스크롤바를 보다 우측 또는 보다 하측으로 이동시켜 더 많은 채널을 표시한다. 사용자는 전술한 화살표키를 사용하여 팝업(56) 내에서 조종할 수 있다. 사용자가 채널을 하이라이트하여 선택한 후 이 채널은 로크된다. 채널아이콘 다음에 로크심벌이 위치되어 이 채널이 로크되었음을 나타낸다. 채널을 로크해제하기 위하여, 사용자는 로크된 채널을 하이라이트하여 선택할 수 있다. 그러면, 채널아이콘 다음에 위치된 로크심벌이 사라져서 로크가 해제되었음을 나타낸다. 사용자는 EXIT키를 사용하여 퍼렌탈 컨트롤 메뉴의 팝업(54)으로 복귀할 수 있다.
시스템은 프로그램정보를 저장하고 있기 때문에, 현재 또는 금후 프로그램이 제한된 채널 상에 표시될 것인 가의 여부를 결정할 수 있다. 또한, 시스템은 프로그램이 제한된 등급 및/또는 내용, V-칩 분류, 혹은 기간 내에 포함되는 가의 여부를 결정할 수 있다. 따라서, 녹화예정된 프로그램의 채널 상에 로크가 되어 있는 경우, 팝업에는 불일치한다는 경고가 표시된다. 사용자가 팝업을 무시하고 3초가 지나가게 되면, 채널은 로크되고 암호가 로크되기 전에 설정되었기 때문에 암호의 필요없이 녹화된다. 일단 채널이 로크되면, 사용자가 정확한 암호를 기입하지 않는 한 그 채널 상에 어떤 프로그램도 튜닝, 녹화, 또는 구입할 수 없다. 그러나, 정확한 암호를 기입할 때 사용자는 금후 프로그램의 녹화스케줄을 잡을 수 있다. 예약녹화 시, 시스템이 로크된 채널을 로크해제하고, 채널을 튜닝하여 프로그램이 녹화된다. 프로그램이 종료되었을 때 시스템은 채널을 다시 로크한다.
도 2d는 사용자가 프로그램을 등급 및/또는 내용별로 로크하고자 할 때 표시되는 팝업(60)의 바람직한 실시예를 나타낸다. 도면에서 잘 알 수 있는 바와 같이, 두 가지 리스트, 즉 등급별 및 내용별 리스트가 표시된다. 사용자는 팝업 상의 관련 내용 및/또는 등급을 하이라이트하여 SELECT키를 입력함으로써 내용 및/또는 등급별로 로크할 수 있다. 프로그램은 등급 및/또는 내용 중 한 가지 이상의 카테고리를 사용하여 로크될 수 있다. 또한, 팝업(60) 상의 내용 설명은 V-칩에 의하여 공급된 데이터에 대응하는 정보를 포함할 수 있다. V-칩 데이터는 괄호로 둘러쌀 수 있으며 프로그램의 V-칩 속성분류(attribute classification)를 나타낸다. 예를 들면, 내용 카테고리 “폭력물(Violence)”은 대응하는 V-칩 속성분류의 정도가 심하지 않은 폭력물(V2), 정도가 보통인 폭력물(V3) 등을 가질 수 있다. 사용자가 쇼를 등급에 따라 로크할 때, 보다 높은 등급 모두는 자동적으로 로크된다. 쇼 내용이 격렬한 순서대로 리스트되어 있지 않기 때문에, 한 가지 내용을 로크하더라도 임의의 다른 내용이 자동적으로 로크되지는 않는다.
사용자는 특정 시간을 로크하여 이 시간 동안 TV시청을 피할 수도 있다. 또한, 사용자는 로크주기를, 예를 들면, 하루, 월요일부터 금요일까지, 주말, 또는 매일로 지정할 수 있다. 도 2e는 사용자가 TV시청을 피해야 하는 시간을 입력할 때의 팝업(62)를 나타낸다. 도시된 바와 같이, 사용자는 로킹 개시시간(생략성 시간은 오후 2시30분), 로킹 종료시간(생략성 시간은 오후 5시), 및 로크주기(생략성 주기는 하루)를 지정할 수 있다. 사용자가 이들 값을 이전에 지정한 경우에는 시스템이 그 값을 기억하여 팝업(62)이 나타날 때 그들 값을 표시한다.
로크기간 중 TV시청을 시도하는 경우, 시스템은 오디오를 뮤트하며 청색화면을 비디오 상에 표시한다. 팝업에는 퍼렌탈 암호를 묻는 표시가 나타난다. 정확한 암호가 기입되었을 때, 짙은 청색화면이 사라지고 오디오가 복구된다. 녹화예정된 프로그램이 있는 시간 동안 로크가 되어 있는 경우, 팝업에는 불일치한다는 경고가 표시된다. 사용자가 팝업을 무시하고 3초가 지나가게 되면, 채널은 로크되고 암호가 로크되기 전에 설정되었기 때문에 암호의 필요없이 녹화된다. 그러나, 로크기간 중 예정된 모든 금후 프로그램의 녹화에는 암호가 필요하다.
도 2f는 구입암호가 설정되어 있지 않고, 사용자가 컨트롤보기 메뉴(66)로부터 “IPPV 소비한도 설정” 기능을 선택하는 경우에 표시되는 팝업(64)의 바람직한 실시예를 나타낸다. IPPV는 임펄스 페이-퍼-뷰를 의미하며, 사용자의 입력장치, 예를 들면, 리모트컨트롤을 거쳐 구입된 PPV프로그램에 관한 것이다. 이것은 사용자가 프로그램 공급자에게 전화를 걸어 프로그램을 구입하는 종래의 PPV프로그램과 상이하다. 사용자는 사용자 입력장치 상의 키를 누르거나 또는 TV 스케줄가이드 상의 키를 선택하여 SELECT키를 입력함으로써 메인 메뉴(50)로부터 구입암호를 설정할 수 있다. 도 2g는 구입암호가 설정되어 있고, 사용자가 컨트롤보기 메뉴(66)로부터 “IPPV 소비한도 설정” 기능을 선택하는 경우에 표시되는 팝업(68)의 바람직한 실시예를 나타낸다. 이 경우, 사용자는 단지 구입암호를 기입하여 SELECT키를 입력할 수 있다. 도 2g에 도시된 바와 같이, 사용자가 실수를 한 경우에는 사용자는 CANCEL키를 입력하여 암호를 재기입할 수 있다.

로크된 프로그램에 액세스하기 위하여, 사용자는 퍼렌탈 컨트롤 메뉴(54)로부터 “모든 로크를 로크해제(Unlock All Locks)” 기능을 선택하여 로크된 프로그램 모두를 로크해제할 수 있다. 또한, 사용자는 SELECT키를 가이드 내에 약 1초 동안 입력함으로써 모든 로크를 텔레비전 스케줄 정보가이드로부터 로크해제할 수 있다. 팝업이 나타나고, 사용자는 “모두 로크해제(Unlock All)” 옵션을 선택할 수 있다. 시스템이 사용자에게 퍼렌탈 암호를 묻고, 정확한 암호를 기입하였을 때 사용자는 모든 이용가능한 채널 상에 모든 프로그램을 튜닝할 수 있다. 프로그램이 로크해제되는 동안, “모든 로크를 로크해제(Unlock All Locks)” 기능이 토글되어 “모든 로크를 재로크(Relock All Locks)” 기능으로 되며, 가이드의 회색 로크심벌이 적색 로크해제 로크심벌로 된다. 사용자는 퍼렌탈 컨트롤 메뉴(54)로부터 “모든 로크를 재로크(Relock All Locks)” 기능을 선택함으로써 이미 로크된 프로그램 모두를 재로크할 수 있다. 또한, TV를 끄게 되면 모든 퍼렌탈로크가 자동적으로 복구된다.
또한, 사용자는 TV 또는 TV 스케줄가이드에서 프로그램으로 직접 튜닝하여 정확한 암호를 기입함으로써 개별 프로그램을 로크해제할 수 있다. 사용자가 로크된 채널로 튜닝한 경우 시스템은 TV스크린 상에 청색화면을 표시하며 오디오를 뮤트한다. 팝업이 표시되어 퍼렌탈 암호를 묻는다. 정확한 암호가 기입된 경우 시스템은 청색화면을 제거하고 오디오를 복구시킨다. 그러나, 이 경우, 사용자가 이미 로크된 채널을 끌 때 퍼렌탈로크는 자동적으로 복구된다. 따라서, 사용자가 로크된 채널을 끈 다음 다시 켠 경우 사용자는 암호를 재기입하여야 로크된 채널을 시청할 수 있다.
로크된 개별 프로그램을 가이드로부터 액세스하기 위하여, 사용자는 시청을 원하는 프로그램을 가이드 상에서 하이라이트하여 SELECT키를 입력함으로써 로크된 프로그램 중 어느 것이든 선택할 수 있다. 암호 팝업이 나타난다. 사용자가 정확한 암호를 기입한 경우 시스템은 원하는 프로그램의 채널로 튜닝된다. 또한, 사용자가 SELECT키를 1초 이상 입력하면, 로크된 프로그램으로 튜닝할 것인가 또는 로크된 프로그램을 녹화할 것인가를 묻는 팝업이 나타난다. 사용자가 선택하였을 때, 암호 팝업이 나타나서 사용자가 암호를 기입할 수 있다. 정확한 암호가 기입된 후, 시스템은 로크된 프로그램으로 튜닝하거나 또는 로크된 프로그램을 녹화하게 된다. SELECT키를 입력하여 팝업 상에서 녹화옵션을 선택하는 대신에, 사용자는 로크된 프로그램을 하이라이트하여 REC키를 입력함으로써 프로그램의 녹화를 또한 요청할 수 있다. 사용자가 정확한 암호를 기입하였을 때 녹화가 진행된다.
도 3은 사용자가 프로그램을 튜닝할 수 있는 가를 결정하는 프로세스 흐름도이다. 바람직한 실시예에 있어서, 여기에 개시된 각종의 프로세스는 컴퓨터 판독가능한 저장매체 상에 저장되어 있는 소프트웨어 컨트롤에 의하여 조작된다. 바람직한 실시예에 있어서, 시스템은 단계(100)에서 퍼렌탈 암호가 필요한 가를 체크한다. 단계(102)에서, 시스템은 사용자가 정확한 퍼렌탈 암호를 공급하였는 가를 판정한다. 정확한 퍼렌탈 암호가 기입된 경우 프로세스는 단계(104)에서 프로그램이 프리이벤트(free event)인 가를 체크한다. 프리이벤트라는 것은 페이-퍼-뷰 이벤트가 아니라는 것이다. 프리이벤트인 경우 시스템은 단계(110)에서 프로그램으로 튜닝되고, 프리이벤트가 아닌 경우 시스템은 단계(106)에서 구입암호 기입을 사용자에게 요청한다. 단계(108)에서, 기입된 암호가 확인된다. 암호가 정확한 경우 시스템은 단계(110)에서 프로그램으로 튜닝된다. 확인 단계(102, 108) 양자 모두에서 부정확한 암호가 공급된 경우 시스템은 요청한 프로그램으로 튜닝되지 않는다.
도 4는 퍼렌탈 컨트롤 기능을 조작하는 프로세스 흐름도이다. 사용자가 TV를 켜거나, 혹은 프로그램 또는 채널을 튜닝할 때, 시스템은 단계(150)에서 프로그램이 표시되기 전에 퍼렌탈 암호가 필요한 가를 체크한다. 퍼렌탈 암호가 있는 경우, 시스템은 단계(152)에서 BOX로크가 설정되어 있는 가를 체크한다. BOX로크는 TV를 매일 24시간 동안 로크상태를 유지시키기 때문에 특정의 TIME로크가 필수적이다. BOX로크가 있는 경우, 단계(154)에서 시청자가 TV를 시청하기 전에 암호가 필요함을 시청자에게 알리는 팝업이 표시되고, 단계(172)에서 퍼렌탈 암호를 기입하도록 사용자에게 요청한다. 사용자가 정확한 암호를 기입하였을 때, 사용자는 단계(168)에서 프로그램, 자동튜닝 스케줄, 또는 프로그램 녹화스케줄로 튜닝할 수 있다.
BOX로크가 설정되어 있지 않는 경우 시스템은 단계(156)에서 채널로크를 체크한다. 채널로크가 설정되어 있지 않은 경우 단계(158)에서 TIME로크를 체크한다. TIME로크가 있는 경우 단계(170)에서 현재시간이 제한시간 범위 이내인 가를 체크한다. 사용자가 제한시간에 TV를 시청하고자 하는 경우 단계(172)에서 퍼렌탈 암호를 공급한다. 마찬가지로, 채널로크가 있으며, 사용자가 로크된 채널로 튜닝하고자 하는 경우 사용자는 단계(172)에서 암호를 공급한다. 사용자가 제한되지 않은 시간에 TV를 시청하고자 하는 경우 사용자는 단계(168)로 진행하여 프로그램, 프로그램녹화등으로 튜닝할 수 있다.
TIME로크가 설정되어 있지 않은 경우 단계(160)에서, 등급이 MPAA(Motion Pictures of America Association)에서 설정한 등급과 대응하기 때문에, 등급/MPAA로크를 체크한다. 등급로크가 설정되어 있는 경우 단계(164)에서 프로그램이 제한등급인 가를 판정한다. 제한등급으로 판정된 경우 사용자는 단계(172)에서 퍼렌탈 암호를 공급한다. 한편, 등급로크가 설정되어 있지 않은 경우 단계(162)에서 내용/ATTRIBUTE로크를 체크한다. 시스템은 단계(166)에서 프로그램이 제한된 내용을 포함하는 가를 체크하고, 제한된 내용을 포함한 경우 사용자는 단계(172)에서 퍼렌탈 암호를 기입한다. 프로그램이 제한된 내용을 포함하지 않은 경우 단계(176)에서 프로그램이 V-칩 분류를 갖고 있는 가를 추가로 체크한다. 프로그램이 V-칩 분류를 가진 경우 단계(178)(도 7에 도시된 상세)에서 제한된 V-칩 분류를 가진 프로그램에 사용자가 액세스할 수 있는 가를 판정한다.
도 5는 단계(106)를 상세하게 설명하는 것으로서, 구입컨트롤 기능을 조작하는 프로세스 흐름도이다. 사용자가 프로그램을 튜닝할 때, 단계(200)에서 구입암호가 설정되었는 가를 체크한다. 구입암호가 설정되어 있는 경우, 단계(204)에서 한도를 초과하였는 가를 체크하고, 한도를 초과한 경우 단계(172)에서 구입암호를 요청하며, 한도를 초과하지 않은 경우 시스템은 단계(208)에서 구입프로세스로 진행된다. 단계(200)에서 구입암호가 설정되어 있지 않은 것으로 판정된 경우, 시스템은 단계(208)에서 구입프로세스로 또한 진행된다.
도 6은 단계(172)를 상세하게 설명하는 것으로서, 암호를 확인하며 사용자가 구입 또는 퍼렌탈 암호를 기입하려고 시도하는 횟수를 제한하는 프로세스 흐름도이다. 단계(250)에서, 사용자는 적용가능한 암호를 공급한다. 단계(252)에서 사용자의 입력을 수신하여 단계(254)에서 암호가 적절한 포맷인 가를 체크한다. 암호가 부적절한 경우, 예를 들면, 문자가 너무 많으면 단계(256)에서 암호가 위법임을 사용자에게 알리는 표시를 한다. 단계(252)를 반복하여 사용자는 적절한 암호를 재기입할 수 있다. 도시된 바와 같이, 사용자는 암호가 부적절한 것으로 거부되는 경우 횟수에 제한없이 암호를 재기입할 수 있다.
사용자가 적절한 암호를 기입하면, 단계(258)에서 기입된 암호가 정확한 가를 확인한다. 암호가 정확한 경우 단계(260)에서 사용자는 로크된 프로그램으로 액세스할 수 있다. 그러나, 기입된 암호가 부정확한 경우 단계(262)에서 사용자가 부정확한 암호의 기입을 시도한 횟수를 추적한다. 단계(264)에서, 단계(262)의 횟수를 숫자 3과 비교한다. 단계(262)의 횟수가 3 이하인 경우 단계(256)에서 위법암호 팝업이 표시되며 사용자는 단계(252)에서 암호를 재기입할 수 있다. 사용자가 정확한 암호의 기입을 3회 이상 시도한 경우 단계(266)에서 암호 기입을 너무 많이 시도하였음을 사용자에게 알리는 팝업이 표시되며, 사용자는 15분간을 기다려야 다시 암호 기입을 시도할 수 있다. 단계(268, 270)에서 플래그(Flag)를 설정하고, 15분간의 제한이 개시된 후 사용자는 암호를 재기입할 수 있다.
바람직한 실시예에 있어서, 시스템을 전원으로부터 단속하더라도 15분간의 제한은 회피될 수 없고, 대신에 시스템을 전원에 재접속할 때 15분간을 재설정해야 하기 때문에 사용자가 암호를 재기입하는데 더 오래 기다려야 한다. 시스템은 사용자의 정확한 암호기입 시도를 3회로 제한하여 암호의 보안을 확실하게 한다. 바람직하게도 타인은 매 3회 시도 후 적어도 15분간을 기다려야 하기 때문에, 타인이 암호를 손상시킬 가능성은 없다.
도 7은 단계(178)를 상세하게 설명하는 것으로서, 프로그램이 V-칩 분류로 제한된 것인 가의 여부 및 사용자에게 액세스가 허용되어야 하는 가의 여부를 판정하는 프로세스 흐름도이다. V-칩 데이터는 채널의 비디오스트림으로부터 얻기 때문에, 프로그램이 V-칩 분류로 제한된 것인 가를 판정하는 한 가지 방법은 채널로 먼저 튜닝하여 데이터를 액세스하는 것이다. 예를 들면, 사용자는 채널 9를 시청하면서 원하는 채널 3으로 튜닝할 수 있다. 도 7을 참조하면, 시스템이 채널 3의 프로그램이 V-칩 분류를 가진 것으로 판정하는 경우, 단계(300)에서 채널 9의 비디오 및 오디오볼륨 정보를 세이브한다. 시스템은 단계(302)에서 사용자가 TV스크린 또는 가이드 내로부터 채널을 변경하는 가의 여부를 판정한다. 사용자가 TV스크린으로부터 채널을 변경하는 경우 단계(304)에서 TV스크린 상에 청색화면이 표시된다.
또한, 사용자가 가이드 내로부터 채널을 변경하는 경우 단계(306)에서 가이드 둘레에 청색 경게선을 인가하여 가이드로 커버되지 않는 화면 중 일부를 차단한다. 단계(308)에서, 시스템이 오디오를 뮤트하여 사용자는 프로그램을 들을 수 없다. 단계(310)에서 원하는 채널, 즉 본 예에서는 채널 3으로 튜닝하고, 단계(312)에서 채널의 비디오스트림으로부터 V-칩 데이터를 판독한다. 단계(314)에서 V-칩분류가 제한된 분류인 가를 판정한다. 다른 실시예에 있어서, 시스템을 채널로 먼저 튜닝하여 V-칩 데이터를 액세스할 필요는 없다. V-칩 등급데이터는 데이터스트림에 포함되며 프로그램 타이틀, 설명 등에 관한 데이터와 같이 유사한 방식으로 수신될 수 있기 때문에, 시스템은 V-칩 등급데이터를 미리 수신하여 이 데이터를 데이터베이스에 저장시킨다. 본 실시예에 있어서, 시스템은 데이터를 데이터베이스로부터 간단하게 검색하기 때문에, 시스템을 채널로 먼저 튜닝하지 않고 퍼렌탈 컨트롤을 인가하여 V-칩 데이터를 액세스할 수 있다. 예를 들어 도 7을 참조하면, 사용자가 채널 9를 시청하고 있지만, 시스템은 채널 3의 프로그램에 관한 V-칩 데이터정보를 데이터베이스로부터 검색함으로써 채널 3의 프로그램이 V-칩 분류를 가지고 있는 가를 판정할 수 있다. 상기 정보를 검색한 후, 프로그램이 V-칩 분류를 가진 경우 시스템은 V-칩 분류가 제한된 분류인 가를 판정할 수 있다. V-칩 분류가 제한된 분류인 경우 퍼렌탈 암호가 필요하며 제한된 분류가 아닌 경우 시스템은 채널 3의 프로그램으로 튜닝된다. 따라서, 본 실시예는 시스템을 채널로 먼저 튜닝할 필요가 없기 때문에, 시스템에서 오디오를 뮤트상태로하고 청색화면 또는 가이드 둘레에 청색경계선이 표시될 필요성이 배제된 것이다.

단계(466, 460 및 456)에 도시된 바와 같이, 사용자는 정확한 암호기입을 3회 시도할 수 있다. 3회 시도 후 기입된 암호가 여전히 부정확한 경우, 단계(468)에서 “시도가 너무 많음(Too Many Attemp)” 팝업이 표시된다. 사용자는, 단계(470, 472)에서 플래그가 설정되어 15분 제한이 개시되기 때문에, 15분간을 기다려야 암호입력 추가 시도를 할 수 있다. 전술한 바와 같이, 사용자는 15분간을 기다리지 않으려고 시스템을 전원으로부터 단속하는 것은 바람직하지 않을 수 있다.

도 2a는 암호가 설정되어 있지 않고, 사용자가 텔레비전 스케줄 가이드의 메인 메뉴로부터 퍼렌탈 컨트롤을 선택하는 경우에 표시되는 팝업(pop-up) 메뉴의 바람직한 실시예를 나타낸 도면이고,
도 2b는 퍼렌탈 암호가 설정 및 기입된 후 표시되는 퍼렌탈 컨트롤 메뉴의 바람직한 실시예를 나타낸 도면이고,
도 2c는 사용자가 “채널별 로크” 기능을 선택할 때 표시되는 팝업의 바람직한 실시예를 나타낸 도면이고,
도 2d는 사용자가 “등급 및 내용별 로크” 기능을 선택할 때 표시되는 팝업의 바람직한 실시예를 나타낸 도면이고,
도 2e는 사용자가 “시간별 로크” 기능을 선택할 때 표시되는 팝업의 바람직한 실시예를 나타낸 도면이고,
도 2f는 구입암호가 설정되어 있지 않고, 사용자가 컨트롤보기 메뉴로부터 “IPPV 소비한도 설정(Set IPPV Spending limits)” 기능을 선택하는 경우에 표시되는 팝업의 바람직한 실시예를 나타낸 도면이고,
도 2g는 구입암호가 설정되어 있고, 사용자가 컨트롤보기 메뉴로부터 “IPPV 소비한도 설정” 기능을 선택하는 경우에 표시되는 팝업의 바람직한 실시예를 나타낸 도면이고,
도 2h는 적절한 구입암호가 설정 및 기입된 후 표시되는 IPPV 소비한도 팝업의 바람직한 실시예를 나타낸 도면이고,
도 3은 사용자가 프로그램을 조정할 수 있는 가를 결정하는 프로세스 흐름도이고,
도 4는 퍼렌탈 컨트롤의 기능을 조작하는 프로세스 흐름도이고,
도 5는 구입 컨트롤 기능을 조작하는 프로세스 흐름도이고,
도 6은 암호를 확인하며, 퍼렌탈 컨트롤 또는 구입암호의 기입을 사용자가 시도하는 횟수를 제한하는 프로세스 흐름도이고,
도 7은 프로그램이 제한된 V-칩 분류를 가지고 있는 가의 여부 및 액세스가 허용되어야 하는 가의 여부를 결정하는 프로세스 흐름도이고,
도 8은 퍼렌탈 컨트롤 또는 구입암호를 변경하는 프로세스 흐름도이고,
도 9는 퍼렌탈 컨트롤 또는 구입암호를 설정하는 프로세스 흐름도이고,

Claims (15)

  1. 텔레비전 프로그램의 일부에 대한 시청을 제한하는 기준을 시청자로부터 입력받는 단계,
    복수의 텔리비젼 프로그램 리스트를 가이드 포맷으로 화면상에 표시하는 단계,
    상기 표시된 리스트 중 하나를 시청 또는 기록을 위해 선택하는 시청자의 입력을 수신하는 단계,
    상기 선택된 프로그램이 상기 제한 기준을 만족하면 시청자에게 암호를 입력하도록 지시 메시지를 표시하는 단계,
    상기 시청자가 상기 지시 메세지에 따라 암호를 입력하면, 상기 제한 기준을 만족하는 선택된 프로그램이 시청 또는 기록될 수 있도록 제한을 해제하는 단계, 및
    상기 제한 해제된 프로그램이 종료하거나 더 이상 튜닝(tuning)되지 않으면 상기 제한 기준을 복원시키는 단계
    를 포함하는 텔레비전 프로그램의 액세스 컨트롤 조작 방법.
  2. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 기준을 시청자로부터 입력받는 단계는,
    상기 시청자가 상기 지시 메세지에 따라 암호를 입력했을 경우 기준 리스트를 화면에 표시하는 단계 및
    상기 기준 리스트에서 입력할 기준을 선택하는 단계
    를 포함하는, 텔레비전 프로그램의 액세스 컨트롤 조작 방법.
  3. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 기준을 시청자로부터 입력받는 단계는,
    상기 시청자가 암호를 입력하도록 화면에 지시 메세지(prompt)를 표시하는 단계,
    상기 시청자가 상기 지시 메세지에 따라 암호를 입력하면, 기준 리스트를 화면에 표시하는 단계,
    상기 기준 리스트에서 입력할 기준을 선택하는 시청자의 입력을 수신하는 단계,
    상기 기준이 입력된 후에 상기 기준 리스트를 상기 화면에서 제거하는 단계, 그리고
    상기 암호가 다시 입력될 때까지 다른 기준의 선택을 차단하는 단계
    를 포함하는, 텔레비전 프로그램의 액세스 컨트롤 조작 방법.
  4. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 기준을 시청자로부터 입력받는 단계는 프로그램 등급을 시청자로부터 입력받는 단계를 포함하는, 텔레비전 프로그램의 액세스 컨트롤 조작 방법.
  5. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 기준을 시청자로부터 입력받는 단계는 채널 식별을 시청자로부터 입력받는 단계를 포함하는, 텔레비전 프로그램의 액세스 컨트롤 조작 방법.
  6. 제5항에 있어서,
    상기 프로그램 리스트 내의 상기 채널 식별 다음에 로크 심볼(lock symbol)을 표시하는 단계를 더 포함하는 텔레비전 프로그램의 액세스 컨트롤 조작 방법.
  7. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 기준을 시청자로부터 입력받는 단계는 시간적 기간을 시청자로부터 입력받는 단계를 포함하는 텔레비전 프로그램의 액세스 컨트롤 조작 방법.
  8. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 기준을 시청자로부터 입력받는 단계는 페이-퍼-뷰 프로그램(pay-per-view program)에 대하여 지출 한도를 시청자로부터 입력받는 단계를 포함하는, 텔레비전 프로그램의 액세스 컨트롤 조작 방법.
  9. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 선택된 프로그램이 제한 기준을 만족하지 않을 경우 시청자에게 암호를 입력하도록 하는 지시 메시지를 표시하지 않고 시청 또는 기록을 위해 선택된 프로그램으로 튜닝(tuning)하는 단계를 더 포함하는 텔레비전 프로그램의 액세스 컨트롤 조작 방법.
  10. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 제한을 해제하는 단계는 제한된 모든 프로그램을 해제하는 단계를 포함하는, 텔레비전 프로그램의 액세스 컨트롤 조작 방법.
  11. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 암호를 입력하는 단계는,
    상기 암호를 검증하는 단계, 및
    미리 정해진 시도 횟수 동안 상기 암호가 틀리게 입력되었을 경우 미리 정해진 시간 간격동안 상기 시청자가 상기 암호를 입력하는 것을 차단하는 단계를 포함하는, 텔레비전 프로그램의 액세스 컨트롤 조작 방법.
  12. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 암호는 시청자에 의해 변경될 수 있는, 텔레비전 프로그램의 액세스 컨트롤 조작 방법.
  13. 표시 화면,
    텔레비전 프로그램의 시청을 제한하는 기준을 시청자로부터 입력받기 위한 수단,
    복수의 텔레비전 프로그램 리스트를 가이드 포맷으로 화면상에 표시하기 위한 수단,
    상기 표시된 리스트 중 하나를 시청 또는 기록을 위해 선택하는 시청자의 입력을 수신하기 위한 수단,
    상기 선택된 프로그램이 상기 제한 기준을 만족할 경우 시청자에게 암호를 입력하도록 지시 메시지를 표시하기 위한 수단,
    상기 시청자가 상기 지시 메세지에 따라 암호를 입력하면, 상기 제한 기준을 만족하는 선택된 프로그램이 시청 또는 기록될 수 있도록 제한을 해제하기 위한 수단, 및
    상기 제한 해제된 프로그램이 종료하거나 더 이상 튜닝(tuning)되지 않으면 상기 제한을 복원시키기 위한 수단
    을 포함하는 텔레비전 프로그램의 액세스 컨트롤 조작 장치.
  14. 제13항에 있어서,
    상기 기준을 시청자로부터 입력받기 위한 수단은,
    상기 시청자가 상기 지시 메세지에 따라 암호를 입력했을 경우 기준 리스트를 상기 화면에 표시하기 위한 수단,
    상기 기준 리스트에서 입력할 기준을 선택하는 시청자의 입력을 수신하기 위한 수단, 그리고
    상기 프로그램이 종료하거나 더 이상 튜닝(tuning)되지 않으면 상기 제한 기준을 복원시키기 위한 수단
    을 포함하는, 텔레비전 프로그램의 액세스 컨트롤 조작 장치.
  15. 제13항에 있어서,
    상기 기준을 시청자로부터 입력받기 위한 수단은
    상기 시청자에게 암호를 입력하라고 하는 지시 메시지(prompt)를 화면에 표시하기 위한 수단,
    상기 암호를 수신하고 인식하기 위한 수단,
    상기 시청자가 상기 지시 메세지에 따라 암호를 입력했을 경우 기준 리스트를 화면에 표시하기 위한 수단,
    상기 기준 리스트에서 입력할 기준을 선택하는 시청자의 입력을 수신하기 위한 수단,
    상기 기준이 입력된 후에 상기 기준 리스트를 상기 화면에서 제거하기 위한 수단, 그리고
    상기 암호가 다시 입력될 때까지 다른 기준의 선택을 차단하기 위한 수단
    을 포함하는, 텔레비전 프로그램의 액세스 컨트롤 조작 장치.
    상기 기준이 입력된 후에 상기 기준 리스트를 상기 화면에서 제거하기 위한 수단, 그리고
    상기 암호가 다시 입력될 때까지 다른 기준의 선택을 차단하기 위한 수단
