PURPOSE:To reduce the cost of a non-aqueous electrolyte battery and to improve the discharge characteristics by using iron pyrite with mean FeS2 content of 85-95% as positive active material. CONSTITUTION:A light metal such as Li, Na, or Mg is used as negative active material, and natural iron pyrite which is mineral-dressed or purified to a mean FeS2 content of 85-95% is used as a positive active material. Iron pyrite, the thermal decomposition initiating temperature of it is 300 deg.C or higher on heating in air and it is stable at room temperature in air, is selected. The iron pyrite ground to particle diameter of 50-250mum is used. By using the positive active material, a non-aqueous electrolyte battery having battery performances which are comparable to that of FeS2 of 95% purity can be obtained at low cost.
