Abstract
PURPOSE:To minimize the expansion of the positive electrode of a nonaqueous- electrolyte battery which accompanies its discharge, by adding either mercury or mercury oxide to the positive electrode whose active material is a metal compound. CONSTITUTION:A negative active material of a nonaqueous-electrolyte battery is a light metal such as lithium or sodium, while a positive active material of the battery is a metal compound such as cupric oxide, bismuth trioxide, lead oxide or cobalt oxide which produces a metal as the discharge of the battery proceeds. The positive electrode of such a battery is added with either mercury or mercury oxide. As a result, the metal which is produced in the positive electrode as the discharge of the battery proceeds, is amalgamated. Consequently, the expansion of the positive electrode can be reduced.
