Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase mechanical octane value of an engine by a method wherein independent water jackets are provided for the cylinder head and cylinder block respectively. Cooling water delivered to each water jacket is properly controlled and especially powerful cooling of the cylinder head can be effected. CONSTITUTION:During warming-up of an engine with cooling water at temperature of 80 deg.C or below, elements 42, 44, 53 of a control valve 30 are situated as shown in the drawing. Cooling water circulating through respective water jackets 4, 5 in the cylinder head 2 and cylinder block 3 is collected together in a chamber 38 through respective outlets 8, 9. Cooling water further circulates to tubings 21, 20 and a part of it into the water jacket 5 through a pump 11 and remaining water returns to the water jacket 4 through tubings 18, 19 by a pump 10. When temperature of cooling water becomes 80 deg.C or above after completion of warming-up, action of a heat sensing actuator 47 closes the valve element 44 but opens the valve element 42 so that cooling water out of the jacket 4 is introduced into the radiator 15 through a tubing 14.
