Abstract

PURPOSE:To avoid delaying the warming-up of an engine and efficiently cool its cylinder head, by effecting changeover so that cooling water circulates in series through the water jackets of the cylinder head and cylinder block when the engine is being warmed up and that the cooling water from both the water jackets flows through the radiator after the warming-up. CONSTITUTION:The outlet pipes 13, 15 of water jackets 4, 5 provided in a cylinder head 2 and a cylinder block 3 are connected to each other through a control valve 15. The pipe 13 is connected to the inlet port 18 of a radiator 17 through a control valve 14 and a pipe 16. The outlet port 19 of the radiator 17 is connected to the water jacket 4 through a water pump 8 and a pipe 7 and connected to pipes 23, 25 through a changeover valve 24 and a pipe 26 branched from the pipe 7. The pipes 23, 25 connect the water jacket 5 and the outlet port 19 of the radiator 17 to each other. A computer 27 regulates the control valves 14, 15 and the changeover valve 24 on the basis of the detected temperature signal from a water temperature sensor 28 to cause flows at low temperature as shown by full lines but cause flows at high temperature as shown by dotted lines.
