Abstract

PURPOSE:To cool a cylinder head effectively in any season by a method wherein the temperature of cooling water passing through water jackets individually provided for a cylinder head and a cylinder block is controlled in accordance with the outside air temperature. CONSTITUTION:At the time of a warm-up operation, a control valve 14 is closed, while a control valve 15 is opened, and the cooling water passing through the water jackets 4, 5 of the cylinder head 2 and the cylinder block 3 is circulated to inlets 6, 7 of the jackets 4, 5 by water pumps 10, 11 after passing through a pipe 24. In this condition, when the temperature of the cooling water is raised, for example, to a temperatur of 80 deg.C or higher, the control valve 14 is opened and the control valve 15 is closed. In addition, when the temperature detected by a water-temperature sensor 31 is higher than a temperature set on the basis of the temperature detected by an intake-gas temperature sensor 49, the control valve 30 is opened, and in the revers case, the control valve 30 is closed. Accordingly, the supply of the cooling water into a radiator 18 is controlled in accordance with the outside air temperature, thereby preventing the over-cooling of the cylinder head 2 and the like.
