PURPOSE:To prevent thermal shock from occurring in a cylinder head by preventing cooling water at a low temperature from rapidly flowing into a water jacket for the cylinder head when the cooling water in a radiator flows into the jacket, at the time of a change-over operation of a change-over valve. CONSTITUTION:When the temperature of the cooling water is not higher than a predetermined temperature, for exmple, 70 deg.C, a control valve 14 is closed while a control valve 15 is opened. Streams of the cooling water comming to outlets 8, 9 after passing through water jackets 4, 5 of the cylinder head 2 and a cylinder block 3, respectively, are mixed with each other in a pipe 24, and a part of the cooling water is returned into the water jacket 5 through an inlet 7, the remainder being returned into the water jacket 4 by a water pump 10. Next, when the temperature of the cooling water is grdually raised to reach a predetermined temperature, the control valve 14 is partly operated by an output of a water-temperature sensor 31 through a controller 32, and a part of the cooling water in the jacket 4 is fed to the radiator 18 through a pipe 17. Accordingly, the cooling water contained in the radiator 18 at a low temperature is fed into the jacket 4 little by little.
