Abstract

PURPOSE:To appropriately regulate the temperature of an engine having a controlled number of cylinders, by providing the idling cylinders and working cylinders with cooling water passages and by circulating cooling water for only the cylinders which are working when the temperature of the engine is not lower than a prescribed level. CONSTITUTION:Stoppable cylinders 2, 3 which can be stopped depending on the operating condition of an engine, and normally working cylinders 1, 4 are provided with a first cooling water passage 17 and second cooling water passages 18, respectively. These cooling water passages 17, 18 are connected through a first control valve 24 and a second control valves 25 to a cooling water passage 20 equipped with a water pump 21. The inflow and outflow sides of the water pump 21 are connected to each other through a by-pass 26 equipped with a shutoff valve 27. The opening and closing of the first control valve 24, the second control valves 25 and the shutoff valve 27 are regulated by a control circuit 28 which receives the output signals of a cylinder number control detector 29 and a temperature sensor 16. As a result, cooling water is circulated through only the cooling water passages for the cylinders which are working when the temperature of the engine is not lower than a prescribed level.
