Abstract
A water cooled internal combustion engine with heat exchanger to cool or heat combustion air has a thermostatic valve controlled by the cooling water temperature connected to the heat exchanger which removes heat from the coolant and the heat exchanger (10) for combustion air, such that at temperatures of the coolant water above or below the specified valves adjustments to the circulation are made by means of the coolant pump. A further thermostatic valve controls the operation of the combustion air heat exchanger and disconnects the circulating pump as necessary. A non return valve prevents flow of cooling water in the return pipe of the heat exchanger and another non return valve is situated in the other heat exchanger.
