A combined boiler furnace and air conditioner comprises a housing the lower part 3 of which contains combustion chambers 1 and 2 respectively fired by solid fuel and fluid fuel surrounded by a common jacket 15 containing water or a light oil, the latter being supplied by a pipe 30 to a heat exchanger 28 in the upper part 8 of the housing and disposed in the path of fresh or recirculated air. This air entering at 20 passes in turn through a filter 22, a fan 23, a cooler 31, the heat exchanger 28 and out at 26. Liquid from the heat exchanger 28 is returned to the jacket 15 by a three-way valve 41, pipe 42, tank 43 and pipe 45 incorporating a pump 46. Cooler 31 operates as a de-humidifier being supplied with an evaporatable refrigerant from a conventional refrigerating system. When heating the air, it may be necessary to raise its humidity by a sprayer 35 connected by a pipe 34 to water tubes 60 in the combustion chambers and controlled by a hygrometer in one of the rooms to be air conditioned e.g. by an electromagnetically-operated valve 61. When it is desired to cool the air and not de-humidify it, cooler 31 is cut out and the heat exchanger 28 is used as a cooler operating by cold water supplied through pipe 51 and taken off by valve-controlled pipe 63. Water may be taken directly from jacket 15 for use in radiators or as a warm water supply, or water pipes 10 disposed in said jacket above combustion chamber 2 may have the same function. Jacket 15 may have a heat-insulating casing 14 of asbestos or firebrick.
