Abstract
A pump (4) circulates cooling water through an internal combustion engine (1). The water coming from the engine is cooled in a radiator (2) by heat exchange with air which is blown over the radiator by a fan (8). A thermostatically controlled three way valve (5) between the pump and the radiator can bypass water round the radiator to prevent excessive cooling. The water pump (4) is driven by a variable speed electric motor (11). The motor is energised b a control circuit (13) which has a constant voltage input to serve as a reference base and a variable input from a temperature transducer (12) on the engine. The pump speed is thus governed to maintain optimum combustion temperature for efficiency and a clean exhaust.
