Abstract
Regulation of the coolant temp. in internal combustion engines is achieved as the coolant is pumped (104) through a closed loop between the engine (101) and the radiator (103) but has a shunt path (106) which can by-pass the radiator. The by-pass is brought into operation by a diaphragm operated unit (108) which mechanically drives the valve due to expansion and contraction of its contents. The radiator fan (109) is driven by a variable speed electric motor (110) which is controlled from a calculator (116) fed by a temp. sensor (115) mounted on the engine. The calculator similarly controls the by-pass valve through its diaphragm control by controlling the current to its heating coil. A further output from the calculator determines the throughput of the circulation pump via a second motor (112).
