Abstract

1,092,159. Cooling internal-combustion engines. DAIMLER BENZ A.G. Dec. 14, 1965 [Dec. 15, 1964; Feb. 25, 1965], No. 53045/65. Heading F4U. [Also in Division F1] Starting of diesel engines is facilitated by heating the intake air by means of a heat exchanger 3, Fig. 1, which functions during normal running to cool the intake air. The heat exchanger 3 is provided in a liquid cooling circuit, having a pump 12 and radiator 9, which is independent of the engine cooling circuit provided with pump 16 and radiator 8. The two circuits are connectable at starting to a pre heater 15 having therein a pump. At starting cocks 11, 13 are set so that heated liquid from preheater 15 is circulated through the engine cooling circuit, the thermostat 6 by-passing the radiator 8. When the engine is heated, cocks 11, 13 are moved so that the preheater 15 supplies heated liquid to the circuit of the heat exchanger 3 to heat the air entering the engine. When the engine is running the preheater is disconnected and the circulation in the circuits 8, 9 is taken over by the pumps 16, 12. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the heat exchanger 25 has one coil 32 in the engine cooling circuit and a second coil 33 connected to a preheater 31 for starting. In Fig. 4 (not shown) the heat exchanger 45 is heated at starting by hot gases supplied through passage 49. When the engine starts, the passage 49 is supplied with exhaust gases through passage 47.
