Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable low slag operation of a blast furnace by adjusting the quantity and quality of the less than 1mm fine grain portion of starting material for sintering in manufacture of sintered ore for the furnace to lower the SiO2 content of the ore as well as facilitate formation of a melt in sintering.
CONSTITUTION: The amount of SiO2 and CaO contained in starting material for sintering is reduced as a whole independently of coarse grains and fine grains to reduce the amount of SiO2 and CaO contained in the not less than 1mm coarse grain portion. SiO2 and CaO in the less than 1mm fine grain portion of the starting material are then increased by a required amount. Thus, the SiO2 content of the material is lowered to 5.4% or less as a whole. The fine grain portion is adjusted to 25% or more, and the basicity CaO/SiO2 of the portion to 1.3 or less, enhancing the reduction strength of sintered ore. By adjusting the SiO2 content of the fine grain portion to 24% or more of the total SiO2 content of the ore the sintering property of the material is improved. Since the SiO2% of the whole ore is low, little slag is formed, and the amount of coke used in a blast furnace can be reduced.
