Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance the hydrogen induced cracking resistance of a steel plate by restricting the S, O and Ca contents of the plate to specified values and controling the reduction ratio to spheroidize the form of sulfide type and oxide type inclusions in the plate structure.
CONSTITUTION: The chemical compsn. of a steel plate is adjusted as follows: C 0.005W0.20%, Si 0.01W0.80%, Mn 0.6W2.2%, P<0.025%, Al 0.01W0.10% and the balance Fe as basic components and S<0.003%, 0<0,005% and Ca< 0.008%. The reduction ratio and the S, O and Ca contents are controlled so as to satisfy equation (1) relative to the reduction ratio R and the S, O and Ca contents, thereby spheroidizing the form of sulfide type and oxide type nonmetallic inclusions such as MnS and Al2O3 in the steel. A specified small amt. of one or more out of Cu, Ni, Cr, Mo, Nb, V, Ti and B may be added to the compsn. Thus, a steel plate is manufactured having superior strength, superior toughness and remarkably superior hydrogen induced cracking resistance.
