Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent occurrence of a hydrogen-induced crack in a steel of a certain compsn. by adding a specified amt. or more of acid-insol. nitrogen and oxygen to the steel to control penetration of atomic hydrogen into the steel.
CONSTITUTION: A steel contg. C 0.01W0.25%, Si 0.01W0.8%, Mn 0.2W2.5% Nb 0.005W0.10%, Ti 0.005W0.03% (Nb+10Ti>0.06%), Al 0.005W0.06%, P< 0.03%, S<0.03%, acid-insol. nitrogen 0.002W0.015% and oxygen 0.0015W0.01% or further contg. one or more out of Cu<0.5%, Ni<1.5%, Cr<0.5%, Mo<0.6%, V<0.1%, B<0.003%, a rare earth element <0.02% and Ca<0.003%. This steel has a property preventing penetration of atomic hydrogen formed by decomposition in the presence of wet hydrogen sulfide, and it is used as line pipe steel with superior hydrogen-induced cracking resistance.
