Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a spring steel with superior hardenability, superior wear resistance, high fatigue resistance and high toughness by adding B or Cr together with an adequate amount of V or Nb to a high Si spring steel and regulating the N content to a restricted amount or less.
CONSTITUTION: A spring steel with superior hardenability and wear resistance is obtd. by providing a composition consisting of, by weight, 0.50W0.80% C, 1.50W 2.50% Si, 0.50W1.50% Mn, 0.05W0.50% V and/or 0.05W0.50% Nb, 0.0005W0.01% B and/or 0.20W1.0% Cr, ≤0.0080% N and the balance essentially Fe. Among the components C increases the strength, Si improves the strength and wear resistance, and Mn enhances the strength. V and Nb form carbides in the structure and enhance the wear resistance. B enhances the hardenability and wear resistance, and Cr enhances the hardenability. Since N bonds to B and deteriorates the effect of B, the N content is restricted to ≤0.0080%.
