Abstract
PURPOSE: Copper containing a specified amount of Ca and O2 is cold processed with an surface reduction of greater than 95% and then annealed to produce soft sire conductor without decreasing electrical conductivity.
CONSTITUTION: Electolytic copper metal is added with scrapped wire and melted at 1150°C, then treated by oxidation and reduction so that the molten metal will contain about 500 ppm O2. Then mother alloy consisting of Cu; 2% and Cu; 98% is added to the metal in an amount of 0.01 to 0.02% and agitated. Ca is partially combined with O2 to provide copper containing Ca; 5 to 200 ppm and O2; 30 to 400 ppm, which is casted into metal mold. The resulted cast ingot is heated at 800°C for 1.5 hours and hot rolled into rough drawn wire. This wire is cold drawn under the condition of 95% surface reduction or more, and then annealed in oil bath. The contained Ca permits copper wire to lower its softening point and to soften the material, meanwhile the contained O2 oxidizingly removes Fe, Sn, Pb and other minor impurities that will decrease electric conductivity.
