Abstract

PURPOSE: To form an electric conductor having excellent workability and excellent solderability by the procedure in which the surface of copper or copper alloy conductor is plated with silver through an under metallic coat, then an outer layer plating of a specific metal is applied to the silver plating, and lastly the cnductor is processed by drawing and heating.
CONSTITUTION: The surface of the core conductor 1 of copper or a copper alloy is provided with the silver plating layer 3 through the under metallic coat 2 of nickel, cobalt, iron or an alloy of these. Then, the silver plating is further plated with a metal other than silver, e.g., tin, indium, zinc, bismuth, antimony, etc., which is capable of forming an alloy with silver which serves to reduce the oxygen dissolution capability of silver and also is capable of diffucsing into silver. Subsequently, the composite conductor is subjected to a mechanical processing such as drawing, etc. to make the silver layer 3 denser in order to suppress the dissolution of oxygen into the silver layer and then to a heat treatment to form the silver alloy layer 4 with another metal. With this method, it is possible to form the alloy layer on the surface by treating it by heating in the atmosphere.
