Abstract
PURPOSE: To produce a conjugated diene compound useful as a raw material of synthetic rubbers, terpene compouds, etc., in high yield, suppressing the side reactions and the corrosion of the reactor, by heat treating a 1,3-diol in the presence of a boron oxy-acid in liquid phase.
CONSTITUTION: A 1,3-diol I (R1 and R2 are H, or one is H and the other is methyl) is heated at ≥130°C, pref. 140W190°C in the presence of an oxy-acid of boron, e.g. orthoboric acid, meta-boric acid, etc., or an oxygen-containing boron compound which gives an oxy-acid under the reaction conditions (e.g. B2O3, a boric acid ester of a 1W5C aliphatic alcohol) and water to afford a conjugated diene compound II (R1W3 are H, or one of the R1W3 is methyl and the other two are H). The amount of the oxy-acid or the oxygen-containing boron compound corresponds to ≥25 wt% aqueous solution of boric acid (as ortho-boric acid).
