Abstract
PURPOSE: A product resulting from the reaction between a phenol and an α-chlochlooraganic ester in a specific solvent in the presence of an acid acceptor, is treated with a mineral acid and then esterified by removing water as an axeotropic mixture to produce titled compound of high purity in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: A phenol of formulaI(X is lower alkyl of 1-2 carbon atoms; n is 0,1-3) or a naphtol of formula II and an α-chloro-organic ester of formula III (R is H, methyl; R' is alkyl of 3 or more carbon atoms) are heated in a benzenoid hydrocarbon solvent in the presence of an acid acceptor of an alkali metal carbonate or alkali metal bicarbonate and the reaction product is neutralized with a mineral acid. Then the mixture is heated together width a catalystic amount of an acid and the esterification is effected by removing water as an azeotropic mixture to produce objective compound of formula IV or V.
USE: Growth retardant against weeds.
