Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:Pyrone derivatives of formula I (R is H or CH3 group; R1 is H, alkyl, or benzyl group) or formula II.
EXAMPLE: 4-Hydroxy-5-methoxycarbonyl-6-methyl-3-n-octyl-2-pyrone.
USE: Plant growth retardants.
PROCESS: A malonic acid dihalide, e.g. a compound of formula III (R is H, alkyl, or benzyl group), is reacted with methyl acetoacetate of formula IV in a solvent inert to the reaction under heating to give the objective compound of formula I (R is H), which is, if necessary, methylated with a diazomethane in an inert solvent at room temperature to form the desired compounds of formula I and II (R is CH3 group) usually as a 3:2 mixture. The compounds are then separated by recrystallization or chromatography.
